Anysbos, Grenache Noir 750ml 2018South Africa, Botriver
‘Marelise Niemann is the queen of Grenache! Not only is her Momento one of SA’s best, but she also makes this incredible Ansybos. Different in style to those from the Southern Rhône, it's more Pinot Noir-like with sublime purity, aromatics and poise. Just a delicious and profound drink that will age for a decade.’ – Roland Peens (Jul 2020)
'Juicy and elegant with pretty, bright wild strawberry and hints of crushed stone; super inviting. The nose is both exotic and poised, expressive and coiled. The palate follows with refined tannins, dry and detailed, with a wonderful focus and a melange of potpourri spice balanced with savoury, coated tannins. The palate is precise and very elegant with a clean and linear finish. Beautifully defined, this an amazing expression of the lighter style.' – James Pietersen (Jul 2020)
'Super complex and expressive nose that is very precise, detailed and perfumed with notes of cherry confit, botanicals, vermouth spice and a striking line of blood orange and pomegranate spice. The balance and weight are super fine, concentrated and harmonious, quite discreet and feminine in its own kind of way. If this is the quality Marelise has achieved with her maiden Anysbos vintages, it makes the mind boggle at the end game potential. Really delicious!' – Anysbos
Alc: 13.8% | RS: 1.6 g/L | TA: 5.5 g/L | PH: 3.4
Only 2-3 tons per hectare harvested form these dry land bush vines in 2018.
The grapes were cold soaked for 3 days in small 1.5 ton tanks with the use of 30% whole bunches. Once natural fermentation started, gentle punchdowns were done by hand, 3 times per day. The wine spent a total of 3 weeks on the skins before a gentle press with our basket press.
The wine matured for 20 months in older French oak 225L barrels before bottling in December 2019.
Tasting notes on the 2017 vintage:
'The flavours on 2017 resonate delicately but persistently with that of the local shrub, anysbos (’anise/liquorice bush’). Some cured meat savouriness too. Lovely purity of fruit, intensity & freshness. Naturally fermented & matured in old oak for 20 months. A beautiful terroir expression.' – Platter's Guide, 4.5* (94/100)
