Botanica, Arboretum 2017 Bottle size: 750mlSouth Africa, Stellenbosch
'Arboretum is our flagship wine crafted from the fruit of the organically farmed estate vineyards in Devon Valley, Stellenbosch. It is a Bordeaux blend comprised of the best barrels the vintage gives the winemaker. The name celebrates the botanical collection of trees that graces Botanica’s home, Protea Heights Farm.' – Botanica
Blend: 53% Cabernet Sauvignon, 23% Cabernet Franc, 21% Merlot and 3% Petit Verdot
'Matured for 15 months in French oak, 10% new. A complex nose showing red, black and blue berries plus herbs and flowers. The palate displays wonderful fruit purity and fine tannins – poised, properly detailed and super-long.' – Wine Mag Cape Bordeaux Red Blend Report 2019, 94/100
'Rich, plush 2017 a barrel selection of cab, cab franc, merlot (53/23/21) & splash petit verdot, seamless after 11 months in mostly older oak to show off ripe dark fruit, more complex than 2016 (4 stars, 89 pts) with leafy & floral aromatics.' – Platter's Guide, 4.5* (93/100)
'Arboretum comes from Ginny Povall's beautiful home vineyard in Devon Valley and is a Cabernet Sauvignon-dominated Bordeaux style red blend. Grippy, serious and dense, with firm, layered tannins and youthful plum and damson fruit. Drink 2020-28.' – Tim Atkin MW, SA Special Report 2019, 91/100
Alc: 14.5% | RS: 3.1 g/L | TA: 5.7 g/L | PH: 3.61
Botanica, located on Protea Heights farm, was founded in 2009 by owner and winemaker, Ginny Povall. Since Protea Heights farm was the first in South Africa to cultivate indigenous protea flowers commercially, it is fitting that the wine labels are floral themed. Just under half of the 21.6 hectares are planted with indeginous flowers, and since 2014 Botanica has been practising organic farming in their 5-hectare vineyards.
