Ashbourne, Sandstone 750ml 2020
South Africa, Hemel-en-Aarde'51% Sauvignon Blanc fermented in amphorae, 25% Semillon in older oak and 24% Chardonnay in ceramic egg. This is the third vintage of this wine by incumbent winemaker Emul Ross (his predecessor Hannes Storm having made 2009 and 2010 before production was suspended for a while) and it is his most assured offering to date. Enticing aromatics of pear, peach, citrus, blossom, a subtle herbal note and sea breeze while the palate shows pure fruit, zippy acidity and a pithy finish. It’s elegant, delicate even and beautifully poised.' – Christian Eedes, Winemag.co.za, 93/100
'This is an innovative blend that captures the most beautiful possible expression of the sandstone-derived soils in the Hemel-en-Aarde Valley. Free by design of excessively dramatic varietal fruit, the focus of the wine is on bright, minerality, salinity and vibrant natural acidity, coated by a full and gentle viscosity derived from a unique endemic yeast combined with wild yeasts, and the method of vinification, not from high alcohol. Nearly three decades of family experience have gone into this blend.' – Winemaker
