Boekenhoutskloof, The Chocolate Block 2019 Bottle size: 750mlSouth Africa, Swartland
'Based on Syrah with the remaining 29% made up of Grenache, Cinsault, Cabernet Sauvignon and a soupçon of Viognier, this deservedly successful Swartland red has built up a worldwide following. Aromatic and supple, it has notes of ginger spice and sweet red berry fruit, a patina of toasty oak and supple tannin. Drinkable young but will develop further in bottle. Drink 2022-26.' – Tim Atkin MW, SA Special Report 2020, 92/100
'Consisting of 71% Syrah, 11% Grenache, 9% Cinsault, 8% Cabernet Sauvignon and 1% Viognier, the nose shows red and black berries, some floral fragrance, spice and a hint of toasty oak while the palate presents as somewhat sweet and soft. It initially gives the impression of luxuriousness with good depth of fruit (alcohol is 14.69%) but ultimately comes across as a bit cloying – it’s not a bad wine so much as inauthentic.' – Christian Eedes, Winemag.co.za, 90/100
'The nose is dark, intense and brooding with aromas of black cherries, cardamom, sweet tobacco, espresso and subtle whiffs of perfume. The dark fruit character of the nose follows through onto an exceptionally complex, juicy palate with gentle nuances of ripe plums, violets, black olives, cloves, and liquorice. The mid-palate is focused, lithe and elegant with very fine, cocoa powdery tannins. The wine is medium bodied, very balanced with an earthy, layered character, covering the entire spectrum of berry fruit - from tart red plums to rich blue and black berries. The finish is svelte, clean and dry, peppery and lingering, with hints of dried cranberry, tar, graphite and smoke.' – Winemaker
