Syrah

The story began with Michel Chapoutier, a unique man with a thirst for knowledge, definitely one of a kind. Michel is openminded and always willing to learn. He seeks to discover and reflect the full potential of his terroirs and let the soils express their true character. That which gives the wines their signature style. This now forms the basis of the M. CHAPOUTIER ethos and their team strives to reveal the very best of what the soils have to offer.

For M. CHAPOUTIER, the vintage is left as is: no processes such as chaptalisation, the addition of yeast or acidifying agents which would impinge on the unexpected by-products of a capricious climate. Michel Chapoutier says as much: ‘Vintage is truth, not bluff. In a way, correcting a vintage is tantamount to telling a lie. It would be so much more honest to make a wine without vintage’.

The soil used was chlorite and ferruginous mica-schists blending in loess depressions and earth veins. The plot producing this wine is located on the border of the “Côte Blonde”.

Tasting notes:
'Showing beautifully from barrel and now from bottle, the 2013 Côte Rôtie la Mordorée comes from schist soils, was completely destemmed and spent 18 months in 25% new French oak. Its deep purple color is accompanied by classic notes of raspberries, bay leaf, olive tapenade and violets. Possessing beautiful minerality, a full, layered mid-palate and building tannin, drink this beautiful wine anytime over the coming 15 or more years.' – Wine Advocate, 94/100

'Tightly packed but rippling with energy, this has a coiled core of raspberry, bitter plum and violet notes, augmented by black tea, savory and sweet tapenade flavors. The long finish pulls everything together, maintaining vibrancy along the way. There's superb drive and tension here. Best from 2018 through 2030.' – Wine Spectator, 94/100

'(half of this fruit came from the Côte Blonde and the other half from the Côte Brune): Brilliant purple. Suave, expansive aromas of fresh blueberry, black raspberry, incense and candied flowers. Sweet, seamless and concentrated, offering intense dark fruit preserve and cola flavors and suggestions of licorice and spicecake that build with air. In a generous, fruit-forward style, but there's very good structure here as well. Sneaky tannins frame the energetic dark fruit on the very long, juicy finish.' – Josh Raynolds, Vinous.com, 93/100

Vinification:
The grapes are entirely destemmed and vinified in concrete tank. Daily pumping over ensure a good extraction of the colour and tannins. The temperature of vinification does not exceed 32°C. Only the free-run juice is used.
