'For the second year in a row, De Krans has produced my fortified wine of the year, delivering a brilliant Vintage Reserve that wouldn't look out of place in a line-up of top Portuguese Ports. Rich, complex, focused and peppery with notes of Asian spices and dark, inky fruit, this is a wine that will improve for a decade or more. Drink 2025-35.' – Tim Atkin MW, SA Special Report 2019, 96/100

‘Port’ with established record of quality & ageability, from touriga with tintas barocca & roriz. 2017 inevitably powerful in youth, with serious structure of chalky tannins, great depth of flavour, & subtle spirit fire. Impressive now, but a decade will bring harmony & complexity.' – Platter's Guide, 5* (95/100)

'74% Touriga Nacional, 18% Tinta Barocca and 8% Tinta Roriz. Matured in big vats for 20 months. Red and black fruit, tea leaf, liquorice, earth and spice on the nose while the palate shows dense fruit and firm tannins. Rich and thick textured, this is forceful stuff.' – Winemag Prescient Top 20 Wines South Africa 2020 Report – Best Sweet & Fortifieds, 94/100

Producer information De Krans is situated along the upper reaches of the picturesque Gamka River Valley in Calitzdorp in the Klein Karoo. The rich and long history of the farm dates to 1890, when it was bought by the Nel family. The current cellar was built in 1964 by Chris Nel and his brother Danie. The first Portuguese grape variety in Calitzdorp was planted in 1973 at De Krans by a twist of fate. Chris Nel, father of Boets & Stroebel Nel, intended to plant Shiraz, which turned out to be Tinta Barocca, when the newly planted vineyard started bearing grapes in 1976! Now Calitzdorp is known as South Africa’s Port Capital with these varietals leading the way.
