Tokara, Director's Reserve Red 750ml 2017South Africa, Stellenbosch
Blend: 73% Cabernet Sauvignon, 15% Merlot, 9% Petit Verdot and 3% Cabernet Franc
'4-part Bordeaux blend, 2017 cab-led (73%) like also-stellar 2015. Cassis rich, spice array & cocoa depths from 22 months in barrel, half new. Structured for ageing, what cab does best, but deep muscle tone no interference with the polish, tailored power. 2016 untasted.' – Platter's Guide, 5* (95/100)
'Matured for 22 months in French oak, 54% new. A wonderfully enticing nose with top notes of flowers and herbs before red and black fruit plus pencil shavings. The palate has great purity and freshness to go with fine tannins – poised and precise.' – Winemag Prescient Cape Bordeaux Red Blend Report 2020, Top 10
'Part of a very impressive current range from Tokara, this is every bit as good as the Director's White. Marrying Cabernet Sauvignon with 27% Merlot, Petit Verdot and Cabernet Franc, aged in 54% new wood, it's refined, elegant and leafy, with on point tannins, wonderful freshness, stylish oak spice and the structure to age further in bottle. 2022-29.' – Tim Atkin MW, SA Special Report 2020, 95/100
'Rich and intense blackberry and cherry notes with earthy forest floor and brooding spice. Dark and smoky palate.' – Decanter World Wine Awards, 93/100 (Silver)
'The wine has stunning depth of colour with an intense garnet centre and a ruby rim. The nose showcases complex aromas of ripe red and black fruits with hints of dried cranberry, baking spice and graphite. The wine enters the palate with incredible purity and focus. Flavours are those of dark cherries, blackberries and ripe plum skin. Sumptuous and full there is a hint of spice on the mid-palate which leads to fine, firm tannins on the finish.' – Tokara
