Tasting notes:
'Notes of wood and reduction are sufficiently prominent that I would recommend decanting this first if you're going to try a bottle soon. Otherwise there is both good verve and delineation to the lightly mineral-inflected middle weight flavors that possess a sleek mouthfeel thanks to the relatively fine-grained tannins that shape the slightly drying finish. This is pretty but it's not as well-balanced as would be preferable. That said, I suspect that as the tannins resolve this will better, if not completely, harmonize.' – Allen Meadows, Burghound, 89/100

Notes on the producer and the 2016 vintage:
'Gérard Harmand and his son Philippe run this 9 ha domaine that owns the rarely seen 1er monopole of La Bossière. Gérard is easing out of the day to day operations and put in only a token appearance so it's clear that Philippe will soon become the primary face of the domaine. Philippe noted that 2016 "was a difficult vintage marked mainly by frost and mildew though it all worked out in the end as the second half of the growing season was propitious. But the least that can be said is that it's not an abundant vintage as we were down some 30% though some parcels were much more affected than others. We picked from the 24th of September and brought in ripe and very clean fruit that needed little sorting.

The skins were thick and thus the colors came quickly with almost no manipulation. I like the style of the 2016s as they're classic but where they really stand out is their power thanks to the very good concentration. They will in all likelihood be approachable young but my guess is that they're going to age better than people currently give them credit for." I agree with Harmand that their 2016s are very good if perhaps not quite at the level of their excellent 2015s. Harmand noted that his 2015s, revisited below, were bottled between January and May 2017.' – Allen Meadows, Burghound

About Domaine Harmand-Geoffroy:
Gérard Harmand and his son, Philippe, lead this 9 hectare family-run domaine that was established in the late nineteenth century. Domaine Harmand-Geoffroy produce quintessential Gevrey-Chambertin from a superb range of terroirs including the remarkable, old vine holdings in Lavaux St Jacques, Champeaux, Perrière and La Bossiere (Monopole), as well as a healthy slice of the Grand Cru Mazis-Chambertin. ‘I agree completely with Harmand’s assertion that they’re now making wines that are better balanced and less overtly rustic than in the past’ writes Allen Meadows. This once under-the-radar and overperforming property is now firmly in the cult category.

‘Having imported Harmand-Geoffroys wines since the 2013 vintage, we are starting to see how well they mature. In fact, these Gevreys must be aged for 5 years before showing off their full spectrum of flavour. Great value, classic Red Burgundy.’ – Roland
