Hartenberg, Gravel Hill 750ml 2016South Africa, Stellenbosch
'This wine is certainly about a sense of place. The Gravel Hill terroir consistently provides a Shiraz that is unique in character, quality and expression.' – Hartenberg Estate
'Estate’s flag-bearer from marginal, gravelly site. 2016 bold, with dark fruit edged with signature ferrous note, spice & savoury. Tight & noticeably firm, but tannin structure is fine, will soften over deserved 10+ years ageing. Oak deftly pulled back to 50% new from 90% in 2015 (4.5 stars, 94 pts) (both ±18 months).' – Plater's Guide, 5* (95/100)
'Gravel Hill is always more savoury and spicy than its stable mate, The Stork, with less power but more refinement. Floral, scented and red-fruited, it has well-integrated 80% new oak, granular tannins, notes of incense, wild thyme and pepper and the effortless concentration of an old-vine site planted in 1968. Drink 2022-30.' – Tim Atkin MW, SA Report 2020, 95/100
'The Hartenberg flagship wine and long – standing SA Syrah classic. On the bouquet umami, Karoo shrub, wood spice, violets and perfumed notes. The palate shows beautiful elegance with layers of black and red fruits. The wine ends with a vein of fine-grained tannins, so typical of this site.' – Winemaker

About Hartenberg Wine Estate:
Hartenberg is situated in its own self-contained valley on the slopes of the Bottelary Hills in Stellenbosch. It was created 30 years ago and has come a long way since its original poor parcel of dry gravelly soil. It was Carl Schultz, Hartenberg’s Winemaker, who saw the potential in ‘The Gravel Hill’ and noted the superiority of the grapes that were grown there. Hartenberg was thus one of the first South African estates to separately vinify grapes from a particular terroir.
The 170-hectare property has a pure water source running through it, and a number of birds and animals which call Hartenberg their home. As such, the owners and staff have accepted responsibility for the conservation of the property through considered and sustainable use of all natural resources. They have various initiatives in place to ensure an environment where nature thrives.
