'The Mackenzie with its backbone of Cabernet Sauvignon, is our flagship red blend. In honour of the Mackenzie family that headed the development of the new era at the Estate. Their vision remains simple: to do whatever it takes to produce wines of outstanding quality by anybody's standards. ' – Hartenberg Estate

Tasting notes:
72% Cabernet Sauvignon, 19% Merlot, 7% Petit Verdot and 2% Malbec

'Dark plum, spice, blackcurrant, cherry nose, hints of cedar, vanilla. Red, dark berry flavours, toasty oak, tannins on long finish.' – Decanter World Wine Awards 2019, 93/100

'Blend always cab-driven, with merlot, petit verdot & malbec (72/19/7/2). 2016 a bold dark-fruit expression includes blackcurrant, plum & cherry with graphite mineral notes, faint herb nuance on the lingering finish. Also in magnum.' – Platter's Guide 2020 ed., 4.5* (93/100)

Alc: 14.61% | RS: 1.77 g/L | TA: 6.07 g/L | PH: 3.51

'This limited volume wine represents a single vineyard block where Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot grapes grow side by side in deep red Tukulu soil.' – Hartenberg Estate

About Hartenberg Wine Estate:
Hartenberg is situated in its own self-contained valley on the slopes of the Bottelary Hills in Stellenbosch. It was created 30 years ago and has come a long way since its original poor parcel of dry gravelly soil. It was Carl Schultz, Hartenberg’s Winemaker, who saw the potential in ‘The Gravel Hill’ and noted the superiority of the grapes that were grown there. Hartenberg was thus one of the first South African estates to separately vinify grapes from a particular terroir.

The 170-hectare property has a pure water source running through it, and a number of birds and animals which call Hartenberg their home. As such, the owners and staff have accepted responsibility for the conservation of the property through considered and sustainable use of all natural resources. They have various initiatives in place to ensure an environment where nature thrives.
