'2017 deftly marries power with restraint; infused with deliciously rich berry fruit & hint of ripe plum. 18 months 20% new French oak polish the tannins, add dark chocolate to elegant texture, broad lingering finish. 14.8% alcohol. Deserves a decade’s patience. 2016 (4.5 stars, 93 pts) had more new oak.' – Platter's Guide, 5* (95/100)

'This is intensely herbal and vibrant on the nose, with prominent notes of cigar tobacco, mint, black licorice, chicory and heavily steeped black tea atop a tight fruit core of cassis and black plum. It’s dense, dark, firm and brooding in character, as the palate follows suit from the bouquet in a seamless fashion. Super tense and direct at the moment, it boasts abundant black fruit and plentiful spice characteristics that are supported by bright black-currant acidity and a framework of supporting yet not overly gripping tannins. Despite its power, it’s quite sexy in feel, well balanced among all its strong elements with an endless finish. A powerhouse for long-term enjoyment that will continue to evolve and impress.' – Lauren Buzzeo, Wine Enthusiast, 93-95/100

'Always an impressive Stellenbosch Cabernet Sauvignon, but especially so in 2017, this is a plush, textured, full-throttle style from RJ Botha with scented, vanilla spicy 70% new wood, layers of blackcurrant and blackberry fruit, fresh acidity and structured tannins. Drink 2022-2029.' – Tim Atkin MW, SA Special Report 2020, 93/100

'Deep ruby with moderate staining of tears, the 2017 Family Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon opens with a juicy frame of black raspberry, dark cherry and redcurrant on the nose along with aromas of sweet oak spices, cinnamon and nutmeg. Full-bodied, the wine is rich, juicy and expressive with firm tannins that sway with elements of elegant oak tones across the mid-palate, without any hard edges. It ends with a long and complex finish that continues to evolve on the palate with a luscious persistence. Just under 9,000 bottles were produced. Drink 2021 - 2032.' – Anthony Mueller, Wine Advocate, 92/100 (Jan 2021)

'An intense bouquet that shows savoury tobacco notes along with liquorice and mint with a deep core of black plum and cassis. The palate shows a density and depth of flavor only found in the best vintages. An opulent entry of the dark fruit seen on the nose gives way to vibrant back palate with a refreshing acidity. Despite the wine’s ‘broad shoulders’ it maintains a svelte structure and almost never ending finish. A brilliant example of how great Stellenbosch Cabernet can be, highlighting the perfect balance between new-world opulence and old-world elegance.' – Winemaker
