'In the 2020 Herbarium Cape White, sauvignon is just 20%, behind chenin and verdelho – not notably obvious in a wine that’s as savoury as it is fruity, though no doubt contributing to the green-fruit edge and firm acidity. A very pleasing wine, in fact, with a stoney bite and a tang that I’m happy to fashionably call salty.' – Tim James, Winemag.co.za.

'Three varieties make up this Cape White blend: Chenin blanc, Verdelho and Sauvignon blanc. The vineyards, all located in the southern, cooler Walker Bay wine district, are surrounded by the rich expanse of the Cape’s fynbos kingdom. The fruit was pressed with a basket press, and the juice settled overnight, after which fermentation occurred spontaneously in aged French oak. Maturation lasted nine months, on lees. The wine was blended and bottled, by hand, without fining or filtration.' – Winemaker

Producer information The two winemakers of Maanschijn, Paul Hoogwerf and Doug Mylrea, produce artisanal wines from vineyards in the Walker Bay region. They attended the same high school and university, and later on in life their paths crossed again, leading them to create Maanschijn. The Maanschynkop mountain, located behind their winemaking building, provided the inspiration for their name. They strive to produce low intervention, fresh and uniquely South African wines.
