Barolo 2015 – Outstanding vintage, new producers & a remarkable boom!
Antonio Galloni of Vinous puts it most succinctly: 'The number of young growers and re-born older estates making compelling wines is greater than at any time… Barolo is going through a remarkable boom.' The wines offer unparalleled value for those who love ethereal, perfumed, long-ageing wine. Piedmont is arguably the most exciting wine region in the world today and we are delighted to add GD Vajra and Luigi Baudana to our portfolio.
James Suckling calls 2015 the 'most outstanding vintage since 2010'. The warm, but mixed vintage, offers vibrant, floral bouquets, energetic fruit and opulent tannins. The blended crus listed below are almost ready to drink, while the best will age for 2 decades.
The warmth of the GD Vajra family is intoxicating and it's worth meeting the incredible family here! We also love GD Vajra’s fresh, aromatic style and broadly traditional winemaking. Undergoing slow macerations and long-ageing in casks, the 2015 Albe shows amazing fruit-purity, while the Ravera and Bricco delle Viole are startling and structured. The Vajras are also custodians of the Luigi Baudana estate and produce another set of incredible wines in Serralunga, including the benchmarks of Cerretta and Baudana.
We have been importing Marengo for a decade and love their plush La Morra fruit and dense structure. Fine, layered and pure, the 2015 Barolo is impressive, but the Bricco delle Viole and Brunate are astonishing and great value.
Finally, the young star of Piedmont, Giulia Negri, continues to make waves as she refines her traditional approach. Her best-yet 2015s are mesmerising and immensely powerful; built for long-ageing.
