Barolo 2015 – Outstanding vintage, new producers & a remarkable boom!

Antonio Galloni of Vinous puts it most succinctly: 'The number of young growers and re-born older estates making compelling wines is greater than at any time… Barolo is going through a remarkable boom.' The wines offer unparalleled value for those who love ethereal, perfumed, long-ageing wine. Piedmont is arguably the most exciting wine region in the world today and we are delighted to add GD Vajra and Luigi Baudana to our portfolio.

James Suckling calls 2015 the 'most outstanding vintage since 2010'. The warm, but mixed vintage, offers vibrant, floral bouquets, energetic fruit and opulent tannins. The blended crus listed below are almost ready to drink, while the best will age for 2 decades.

Barolo 2015s from 3 oustanding producers

The warmth of the GD Vajra family is intoxicating and it's worth meeting the incredible family here! We also love GD Vajra’s fresh, aromatic style and broadly traditional winemaking. Undergoing slow macerations and long-ageing in casks, the 2015 Albe shows amazing fruit-purity, while the Ravera and Bricco delle Viole are startling and structured. The Vajras are also custodians of the Luigi Baudana estate and produce another set of incredible wines in Serralunga, including the benchmarks of Cerretta and Baudana.

We have been importing Marengo for a decade and love their plush La Morra fruit and dense structure. Fine, layered and pure, the 2015 Barolo is impressive, but the Bricco delle Viole and Brunate are astonishing and great value.

Finally, the young star of Piedmont, Giulia Negri, continues to make waves as she refines her traditional approach. Her best-yet 2015s are mesmerising and immensely powerful; built for long-ageing.

GD Vajra, Barolo Albe 2015
This Barolo offers a more immediate approach, with lots of dark berry followed by spice, tilled earth and black truffle. The 2015 Barolo Albe pours to a medium dark color and lays out a mid-weight texture, with bright primary fruit that is expertly woven into the wine. It exposes clearly etched veins of acidity and some determinedly firm tannins. Despite the Albe's accessible personality, I recommend that you wait a few more years before popping the cork. – Wine Advocate, 93/100

Marengo, Barolo 2015
The Marengo family has harnessed the sunshine and the soft warmth of this vintage with an expert touch. The 2015 Barolo (with fruit sourced from four different vineyards in La Morra) is a steady, rich and softly layered expression. The wine is slightly more accessible in the near term, yet there is enough fruit density and firmness to carry it forward in time. Marco Marengo is one of the most talented winemakers in La Morra, and I highly recommend this wine for those just getting to know the complex world of Nebbiolo. – Wine Advocate, 93/100

Giulia Negri, Barolo La Tartufaia 2015
The Giulia Negri 2015 Barolo La Tartufaia is a full and generous expression of Nebbiolo with round and ripe flavors of wild berry, redcurrant, spice, tar, rose and potting soil. This wine presents an easy and accessible approach with nicely integrated tannins and enough acidity to keep the palate refreshed. Maybe it is the power of suggestion, but I also get a hint of black truffle in La Tartufaia. – Wine Advocate, 92+/100
