Crystallum 2019s – Including highly-rated Cuvée Cinéma

Peter-Allan refers to the 2019 Cuvée Cinéma as a ‘grown-up wine’ and we know exactly what he means. His most accomplished release to date, it is classy and refined with long, detailed tannins and joins the very select few SA Pinots to be rated 95/100 by Christian Eedes. To our minds, it is even better than the 2018, which Decanter awarded their title of ‘Best New World Pinot’.

Joining their 2019 releases, Peter-Allan and Andrew Finlayson have an exciting new wine – the Crystallum Litigo 2019. The grapes are from their own vines in a yet-to-be-formalised appellation just past the Hemel-en-Aarde Valley. This is the most elegant and vibrant of the 2019 releases. Hints of black tea, bright red fruit and attractive oak spice lead to a fine, mineral finish. Like the rest of Crystallum’s sought-after 2019s, it is produced in small volumes.

We have also received a few more bottles of the 2019 Clay Shales Chardonnay. Usually available on allocation only, this 0.5-ha single vineyard produces one of our favourite Chardonnays. The 2019 is wonderfully complex with great fruit purity and a chalky backbone. It is quite possibly the best to date, so please make sure you take this chance to get some while you can.

The 2019 Mabalel, from the established Elandskloof vineyard, is sensuous and silky with deep, dark fruit and offers earlier drinking with its softer, more rounded mouthfeel. We also have an allocation of their 100% whole-bunch fermented 2019 Whole Bunch Pinot Noir. Vibrant, fresh and nervier than the others, it has a light-bodied freshness that leaves a lasting impression.

There was no Bona Fide produced in the 2019 vintage.

Tasting notes

Crystallum, Cuvée Cinéma Pinot Noir 2019

Grapes from Hemel-en-Aarde Ridge, 70% whole-bunch fermentation. Compelling aromatics of red and black berries, violets, dried herbs and spice. The palate meanwhile shows both great fruit purity and structure, the tannins fine yet simultaneously grippy. Vivid, balanced and long, the stand-out wine of the vintage. Alc.: 13.5% – Christian Eedes, Winemag.co.za, 95/100

Crystallum, Litigo Pinot Noir 2019

Grapes from a vineyard just beyond Hemel-en-Aarde Ridge in the Overberg. 30% whole-bunch fermentation. Red fruit, rose petal and discreet oak-derived notes on the nose. The palate is light-bodied with fresh acidity and fine tannins. Wonderfully poised and energetic, this is very elegant. Alc.: 13.5% – Christian Eedes, Winemag.co.za, 93/100

Crystallum, Clay Shales Chardonnay 2019

Grapes from Hemel-en-Aarde Ridge. A somewhat shy nose with a hint of citrus as well as some leesy complexity. Good depth of fruit and well-integrated acidity, some pithy grip to the finish. Weighty but not too much so, this is complex and demanding. Alc.: 13.5% – Christian Eedes, Winemag.co.za, 93/100

Crystallum, Mabalel Pinot Noir 2019

Grapes from Elandskloof, 10% whole-bunch fermentation. Red and black fruit plus a hint of smoky reduction on the nose. The palate is rich and relatively plush – with generous fruit and smooth textured, the finish is still nicely savoury. Alc.: 14% – Christian Eedes, Winemag.co.za, 92/100

Crystallum, Whole Bunch Pinot Noir 2019

Grapes from Hemel-en-Aarde Ridge, 100% whole-bunch fermentation. The nose shows red fruit and a slightly herbal quality. Light bodied with fresh acidity and a very dry finish, this is an intriguing rendition of the variety but perhaps not for everyone… Alc.: 13.5% – Christian Eedes, Winemag.co.za, 91/100
