Giulia Negri – Piedmont’s innovative Barologirl

Barolo is booming and Giulia Negri is its rising star. Having taken over her family’s 150-year-old estate, she continues to make waves as she refines her traditional approach. Her 2016s are fragrant and finessed, and elegantly temper the great 2016 vintage. 2016 has been described as 'il sogno'the dream vintage – as it was a classic, late-ripening year resulting in thrilling wines of extraordinary balance.

At its best, Barolo offers unparalleled value for those who love ethereal, perfumed and long-ageing wines. The magic of Nebbiolo is expressed in Giulia Negri’s 2016 Barolo Serradenari. Proclaimed to be the highest vineyard in Barolo, the cool-climate Serradenari parcel in La Morra produces exceptionally delicate and refined wines. Serradenari shows vibrant red fruit and roses, flint, dark spices and an earthy, woodsy quality reminiscent of the surrounding truffle forests – perfect for autumn. It is alluring and approachable now, yet also offers at least a decade or two of cellaring potential.

Tasting notes

Giulia Negri, Barolo Serradenari 2016

Fragrant and chock–full of finesse, this radiant red opens with enticing scents of rose, woodland berry, dark spice and a whiff of wild herb. The vibrant, elegant palate delivers juicy red cherry, strawberry compote, licorice and hints of hazelnut set against taut polished tannins. Bright acidity keeps it balanced. Drink 2024 - 2036. – Kerin O'Keefe, Wine Enthusiast, 95/100 (Jan 2020)

Fragrant with macerated cherry, rose and even a hint of truffle, this expressive red is approachable now for its alluring aromas. Fluid and full of cherry and currant flavors, it has refined tannins and harmony. Mint and earth accents mingle on the finish. Best from 2023 through 2043. – Bruce Sanderson, Wine Spectator, 94/100

This Barolo opens to smoky and flinty aromas that cover some of the fruit intensity. The Giulia Negri 2016 Barolo Serradenari shows a tart and spicy side with small-berry nuances underneath. The entire approach is soft and delicate with a mild and soft-footed impact on the palate. The tannins are dusty and finely textured. This Barolo wraps quietly and softly over the palate. Drink 2022 - 2038. – Monica Larner, Wine Advocate, 92/100 (Jul 2020)
