Domaine Huet 2018 – As good as 1947?
Huet’s 2018 vintage is considered to be a repeat of the legendary 1947 vintage. The 1947 Le Haut-Lieu Moelleux is said to be ‘the most famous Loire wine’ and is globally regarded as immortal (drink before 2104)! It’s in the top 10 of Decanter’s list of wines to try before you die.
Given the wonderful conditions for producing Demi-Sec and Moelleux wines in 2018 – Huet’s speciality – we’re delighted to offer the 2018 Huet Le Haut-Lieu Demi-Sec. ‘The Huet range gives a great snapshot of the quality potential of any given vintage, and for me it is the demi-secs that get the balance just right,’ says Richard Hemming MW of JancisRobinson.com
‘Domaine Huet means ‘I make the best damn Chenin Blanc on the planet’.’ – Mike Steinberger
2018, their 30th vintage of biodynamic farming, brought ‘grapes of great purity and richness’ as per winemaker Jean-Bernard Berthomé who has been with the domaine since 1979. Producing some of the world's greatest Chenin Blancs, Huet is revered for their mineral, long-ageing wines of varying sweetness that, according to Neal Martin, will ‘silence a dinner party with awe and wonderment’.
Huet’s original vineyard, Le Haut-Lieu’s deep limestone-clay soils produce elegant, mineral whites with immense ageability, yet amazing approachability. Demi-Sec is where the sweetness and acidity compete for dominance and is the most food-friendly style of Vouvray. Suited to light meats and fish as well as soft and hard goats’ cheeses, in our opinion, it’s a must-have on every dinner table! Drink in the next 10 to 70 years.
‘You can just buy these blind in confidence knowing they will taste great now, and great in 20 years, and probably outlive you if you store them well.’ – Jamie Goode
