Piedmont's Langhe hills: An affordable masterclass on Nebbiolo

Dear *|FNAME|*,

Nebbiolo could well be Italy's greatest grape, and its northern home, Piedmont, is in its golden age. It can show the same complexity, fresh acidity and immense ageing potential as Pinot Noir. Demand for Italian wines is at an all-time high as they continue to 'stand out for the high quality and low prices' writes Decanter.

'One of the early lessons I was taught was simple but powerful,' shares Antonio Galloni, 'buy the least expensive wine from the best producers.' For fantastic value, look no further than Langhe Nebbiolo as it's often made from the same highly-regarded parcels as the estates' Barolos and Barbarescos. The Langhe Nebbiolos on offer today are incredible examples of the poise and pedigree these entry-level wines can offer.

For Giulia Negri, one of Piedmont's rising stars, the goal with her Langhe Nebbiolo is drinkability. 'This is one of my most important wines,' she explained to Jamie Goode, 'you are judged more for your village wine than your Grand Cru.'

The 2019 Langhe Nebbiolo from GD Vajra, one of the region's oldest and nicest families, is 'Nebbiolo at its most alluring' writes Jamie Goode. Giulia Negri's 2019 Pian delle Mole Langhe Nebbiolo is graceful and 'ludicrously good at the price' says Tim Atkin MW, whilst Pio Cesare's 2018 Langhe Nebbiolo is more muscular and 'gives us an easy and transparent view of this mighty grape from Piedmont'. From the world's best red wine co-operative, Produttori del Barbaresco's 2019 Langhe Nebbiolo is made from declassified Barbaresco vineyards and is 'one of the greatest and most profound value reds on the international wine market' as per Greg Sherwood MW.

In addition to Langhe Nebbiolo, you can find Nebbiolo d'Alba. This is from an older designation and can be more concentrated than the lighter, regional Nebbiolos. Marengo's 2019 Nebbiolo d'Alba Vigna Valmaggiore is one such wine – earthy, complex and still remarkable value, it is 'recommended enthusiastically' by Wine Advocate.

For a while now, many have noted how Piedmont is the new Burgundy. 'Growing numbers of savvy collectors recognise the value, diversity and investment potential to be found in the land of Barolo and Barbaresco,' writes Decanter. Langhe Nebbiolo is the perfect place to start!

Tasting notes

GD Vajra, Langhe Nebbiolo 2019

'Astonishingly floral and expressive with floral red cherries, wild strawberries and some fine spicy notes. Nebbiolo at its most alluring. The palate is expressive with a bit of tannic crunch keeping the sweet raspberry and cherry fruit fresh. This is such a delight. It offers massive drink ability but also some seriousness. A beautiful expression of this grape and the perfumed nose is so gorgeous.'Jamie Goode, Wine Anorak, 94/100

Giulia Negri, Langhe Nebbiolo Pian delle Mole 2019

'The youthful Giulia Negri makes this wonderful declassified Barolo from younger vines in the Serradenari vineyard in La Morra, one of the highest sites in the denominazione. Organically farmed and refreshing, it's a graceful, elegant Nebbiolo showing the freshness of its high-altitude source, beguiling rose petal and old strawberry aromas, a focused, nuanced palate and just the right amount of tannic backbone and acidity. Ludicrously good at the price. 2021 – 2027.'Tim Atkin MW, 93/100

Pio Cesare, Langhe Nebbiolo 2018

'The Pio Cesare 2018 Langhe Nebbiolo gives us an easy and transparent view of this mighty grape from Piedmont. Rather than complexity, the wine delivers primary freshness. Rather than longevity, you get a wine that tastes great straight out of the gate. Aromas of cherry, blackberry and lilac are stacked neatly together. It offers simplicity and harmony. This wine makes a natural partner for your favorite pasta recipes. Drink 2021-2024.'Monica Larner, Wine Advocate, 90/100

Produttori del Barbaresco, Langhe Nebbiolo 2019

'Produttori del Barbaresco makes its Langhe Nebbiolo with declassified Barbaresco fruit (often from parcels on lower slopes) so production volumes are notably reduced in the better vintages when more of the prime fruit finds its way into the delicious village Barbaresco DOCG or indeed one of the classy nine Cru Riservas. This young Nebbiolo is utterly seductive with intricate perfume that wafts out the glass in waves of wild strawberry, red cherry, violets and pink blossom and an underlying hint of garrigue, vermouth botanicals, blood orange and dry roasted nuts. Very classy and quite individual with exceptional quality year in, year out, the 2019 palate is sleek, silky and wonderfully fresh with a mouth watering acidity, youthful chalky tannins and a real melange of cranberry, red cherry, vermouth bitters and subtle liquorice nuances on the finish. Fabulously elegant and energetic, this vintage is ripe and characterful with impressive fruit concentration but also a supple, elegant texture. Another cracking vintage that should drink well over 6 to 8+ years.'Greg Sherwood MW, 93/100

Marengo, Nebbiolo d'Alba Vigna Valmaggiore 2019

'The 2019 Nebbiolo d'Alba Vigna Valmaggiore shows good concentration and a robust bouquet with dark fruit and nutty aromas that remind me of toasted hazelnuts or almonds. Those nutty aromas segue to earthy truffle and potting soil that are also specific to this bottle. Some of my favorite producers offer a Nebbiolo from the Valmaggiore cru in Roero on the left banks of the Tanaro River, and I always recommend them enthusiastically, both for the quality of the fruit and the competitive price points. This release shows a hint of white pepper at the back of its pretty, dark fruit. Some 6,500 bottles were produced. 2021 – 2028.'Monica Larner, Wine Advocate, 92/100
