A South African Young Gun in Rioja – Laventura

Ex-Wine Cellar Young Gun, Bryan MacRobert, cut his teeth at The Sadie Family Wines and Terroir al Límit in Priorat in the late 2000s. Through his travels, Bryan met a 'Riojan' winemaker, fell in love and moved to Rioja in 2013. He started Laventura – 'The Adventure' – and has been shaking up the heavily traditional wine region ever since.

We are delighted to offer his latest vintages which focus on single varieties and new-wave winemaking. Farming old vines back to life with an organic approach, his wines offer more fruit purity than classic Rioja with less oak influence.

'The style is clean and fresh, produced with less extraction and contact with air, and they are using larger barrels to have less impact on the wines.' – Luis Gutiérrez, Wine Advocate

The 2018 Viura is limey and elegant while the 2018 Malvasia is more textured and rich. The 2018 La Nave, the only blend, is a lively, fruit-forward, unoaked and delicious style. His crunchy 2018 Garnacha reminds one of a Swartland wine while the 2017 Tempranillo is pure and crystalline with typical aromatics. Finally, his single-vineyard 2015 Barranco del San Ginés, which is sourced from an 80-year-old vineyard, is profound and fine with scores up to 95/100 from the major critics.

'It's time to take Rioja far more seriously,' wrote Tim Atkin MW recently, as the Rioja landscape is changing dramatically. Thanks to, most notably, our ex-Young Gun Bryan MacRobert who moved to Rioja 7 years ago to start Laventura. Today, his new terroir-driven wines are causing a fuss! 'I want to make Rioja as it once was. I’m trying to make honest wines,' says Bryan who will be presenting his refreshing, innovative and true-to-terroir style of Rioja live over Zoom. Laventura, Viura 2018
This wine has a lemon colour with primary fruit aromas such as apple, pear, lemon, lime, peach and apricot. Secondary aromas of brioche and nuts are present due to the lees contact and barrel ageing for one year. The palate is textured and layered. Good acidity, body and length. – Bryan MacRobert, Winemaker

Laventura, Malvasia 2018
This wine has a golden colour with primary floral aromas of honeysuckle and fruit aromas of gooseberry, lemon rind, peach, apricot and quince. Secondary aromas such as butter, nuts, cinnamon, ginger and nutmeg are present due to the lees contact and oxidative ageing for one year. Slight presence of tertiary aromas such as honey and hay. The palate is textured and layered with a slight waxiness. The tannin is exclusively from the grapes. Good acidity, body and palate length. – Bryan MacRobert, Winemaker

Laventura, La Nave 2018

Laventura, Garnacha 2018
This wine has a pale ruby colour with primary fruit aromas of red fruit such as cranberry, raspberry, strawberry and red cherry. Secondary aromas such as brioche, vanilla and cinnamon due to the lees contact and ageing for one year in barrel. The palate is light and textured with a soft tannin. Good acidity, body and length. – Bryan MacRobert, Winemaker

Laventura, Tempranillo 2017
The red 2017 Laventura Tempranillo was produced with grapes from two vineyards, one in Labastida and the other one in Laguardia. This is the one red I tasted that seemed to take the 2017 heat better, and the wine is not far from the 2016. Yes, it's a little riper, and the fruit is a tad darker, but the wine keeps its poise and composition. It has balance and harmony, and there is only a touch of riper fruit on the finish. It finishes dry. 3,300 bottles were filled after 12 months in 500-liter oak barrels. – Luis Gutiérrez, Wine advocate, 92/100

Laventura, Barranco del San Ginés 2015
The 2015 Barranco del San Ginés is a new single-vineyard, top-of-the-range red from an east-facing plot of 1.18 hectares of head-pruned Tempranillo vines planted in Laguardia in 1935 at 570 meters altitude. It is registered as "viñedo singular," the new official category for single-vineyard wines. There is no room to get any machines into the vineyard, which has to be worked 100% by hand and follows organic principles but without certification. They were able to purchase this terraced vineyard in 2015. It fermented in concrete vats with wild yeasts and matured in oak foudres for 24 months. It's a little darker and riper with the concentration of the old vines, but it's produced more or less the same as the rest of the wines, so the difference is provided by the vineyard. It has forest aromas and flavors, not that common in Rioja wines, mixing Mediterranean with cooler Atlantic characteristics. The palate has abundant, fine-grained but firm tannins and is nicely balanced. It's a powerful yet elegant Rioja Alavesa, with the character of the soils. 1,500 bottles produced. It was bottled in December 2017. From 2017 onward, they will be able to put Viñedo Singular and the name of the village, Laguardia, on the label. – Luis Gutiérrez, Wine advocate, 93/100
