Platter’s 2021 5-star wines: Our two value picks

Kleine Zalze Vineyards shines in the 2021 Platter’s Guide with seven 5-star wines! This strong showing features two Chenin Blancs, including their killer-value Vineyard Selection 2019 Chenin Blanc. This is a feat in itself, considering the immense list of amazing Chenin Blanc winners this year. See our selection of amazing 5-star wines.

Of the 5-star reds, one of our absolute favourite ‘drinking reds’ is the excellent Swerwer Red Blend 2019 from the Swartland. This inspired, Cinsault-led blend, with Grenache Noir and Tinta Barroca, is just so darn delicious and stands out as our Platter's ‘value red’ of the year. Pure, refined and super elegant, you should get some while you can!

A notable observation is the impressive line-up of Cabernet Sauvignons, with many of these from the excellent 2017 vintage. The list includes the soon-to-be-released Le Riche Reserve 2017, Restless River Main Rd & Dignity 2017 and De Trafford 2017. Watch out for these releases in the coming weeks.

Chenin Blanc is, once again, a very strong class, featuring many of SA’s most iconic wines. Unfortunately, most are already sold-out. There are however some gems still available, like the limited volumes of the Alheit-made Carinus Polkadraai Heuwels Chenin Blanc 2018 and 2019, as well as the stunning Paulus Wine Co. Bosberaad 2019, Van Loggerenberg Kameraderie 2019, Mullineux Granite 2019 and Raats Eden High Density 2019.

Keep an eye out for our newsletters in the next few weeks and visit our Platter's 2021 page for regular updates.

Tasting notes

Kleine Zalze, Vineyard Selection Chenin Blanc 2019

As usual, among best value in the guide. 2019 expansive, vivacious tropical fruit flavours combine with cream texture (99% older-oak fermented/7 months, a drop from amphora for 1st time) to deliver pure drinking pleasure. 13.4% alcohol. Stellenbosch vines, like 2018 (4.5 stars, 93 pts). – Platter's Guide, 5* (96/100)

Swerwer, Red Blend 2019

Cinsaut & Grenache forge close partnership in 2019 (49/40), for quiet aromatic homogeneity. Tinta brings forming ripe tannins to the sweet fruit; light touch & freshness sustain it lengthily. More approachable than 2018 (4.5 stars, 94 pts), plenty in store. Understated, delicious. – Platter's Guide, 5* (95/100)
