Tasting notes
Reyneke, Reserve Red 2017
After 20 harvests in South Africa, Rudiger Gretschel regards 2017 as the best vintage he's ever experienced. The quality of this world class Syrah would appear to bear him out. Dense, chewy and complex, it's a Cape Cornas, with dark, brooding damson and blackberry fruit, notes of tapenade and rosemary, subtle oak and a finish that lingers on the palate for a minute. Drink 2022-32. – Tim Atkin MW, 97/100
A triumph for biodynamic & organic viticulture, from single syrah vineyard. 35% bunch-pressed 2017 intense, elegant & fresh, with characteristic white pepper & scrub. More concentration than Biodynamic sibling of this vintage, & even finer than 2016 (4.5 stars, 94 pts). Will develop. – Platter's Guide, 5* (95/100)
Reyneke, Reserve White 2017
This brilliant, barrel-fermented Sauvignon Blanc comes from the top part of the Willow Spring parcel and is the latest in a line of brilliant releases under this label. Saline, pithy and flinty with hints of nettle and elderflower, fine oak and a finish that goes on for ever. Drink 2019-2027. – Tim Atkin MW, 96/100
Elegant expression of sauvignon in 2017, mostly new oak vs older wood for Biodynamic sibling. This a much more outgoing personality, with white peach, florals & lime, developing more yeasty almond nuances on palate. Both vibrant & quite textural courtesy lees contact. – Platter's Guide, 4.5* (93/100)
