Fine wines, from terroirs around the world, generally require ageing to reach the point where they offer the best drinking experience. The question of how long is a more complicated one, as it depends on your taste as well as the style of the wine in question. Wines made in a more traditional style usually require longer ageing. Often austere in their youth, maturity brings them balance and depth. Modern wines can achieve this balance earlier as riper fruit tends to balance bigger structure. Therefore, 8-12 years from vintage is a dependable drinking window, where primary fruit combines with a softer structure and tertiary complexity.

In Europe, 2010 was a benchmark vintage. The small Italian line-up is incredible too, with top crus from Gaja, Conterno and excellent value from Produttori del Barbaresco. There are also 6 bottles of the 100-point Casanova di Neri Brunello di Montalcino.
