The last auction, in a prolific year at Strauss & Co, offers a trove of more than 60 local Bordeaux blends along with French icons. Pristine bottles of Meerlust Cabernet 1975 and 1984, which are now ultra-rare in the market, are on offer along with 7 vintages of Rubicon from 1992-2009. Twenty-two vintages of South Africa’s First Growth, Paul Sauer, are also on the catalogue, including large formats and vertical collections.
Even more rare are the 4 lots of Cordoba Crescendo, including the legendary 1995 and CWG 2001. Known for its elegant, ground-breaking Cabernet Franc-led blend, this is the largest collection we have ever seen.
The Bordeaux list is very impressive and features a host of 2005s from Ducru-Beaucaillou, Lynch-Bages and more. There is value to be found in La Chenade and Cambon La Pelouse, while 3 ‘marquee’ lots are offered ex-châteaux – a vertical Mouton Rothschild collection, Angélus 2004 and the 100-point Pontet-Canet 2010 magnum!
My favourite lot is a 6-vintage vertical, ex-châteaux, of Pichon Lalande from 2002-2010. ‘Pichon Longueville Comtesse de Lalande is arguably the single hottest château on Bordeaux's Left Bank right now,’ writes Antonio Galloni, featuring benchmark, extreme and classic vintages.
