A new wave of progressive winemakers has emerged in SA over the last decade. This movement of, mostly, young winemakers was arguably kicked-started by Eben Sadie back in 2000. His revolutionary view of the Swartland, avant-garde winemaking, as well as an international perspective, pushed the Sadie Family to become SA's new benchmark for fine wine. The new breed of local winemakers took this inspiration, spread throughout the Winelands and ignited the entire industry.
Wine Cellar started showcasing these future stars at our annual Young Guns™ tastings in 2011 and we continue to scour the vineyards and unearth the producers who’ll be making tomorrow’s greatest wines. Rare as hens' teeth, we are excited by the first iterations of Mev. Kirsten, back then made in a skin-contact, more natural style from SA’s oldest Chenin Blanc vineyard, Alheit’s break-through Cartology, Callie’s maiden-release Porseleinberg, and the first vintages of Leeu Passant that seemingly redefined SA Chardonnay. All these are available on auction, along with wines from 40 other Young Gun producers and the emerging New Wave.
