Fine wine tastings in Cape Town & Johannesburg Roland Peens, 25 August 2020

New tastings: Bordeaux ‘17, Burgundy ‘18, Rhône ‘17, Piedmont ‘16 & Champagne

Wine Cellar is excited to showcase the new vintage from the greatest wine regions in the world. Highlighting benchmark producers across each region, we will taste 14 – 16 wines at each event and delve into the latest trends and wine culture. As per usual, these are sit-down tastings, presented in an educational but casual and entertaining manner.

Please note, to make more time available before the curfew, the tastings will start at 6 pm and end sharply at 7:30 pm and will be hosted at Wine Cellar Observatory, Cape Town and in Dunkeld, Johannesburg.

We look forward to tasting with you once again!

Bordeaux 2017: The dawn of the terroir-vintage? – R 1,000

Johannesburg: Wednesday, 9 September at 18h00, Dunkeld West Centre

Cape Town: Wednesday, 16 September at 18h00, Wine Cellar Observatory

The 2017s are a testament to the consistency that Bordeaux now achieves, such that even unexceptional growing seasons can bestow great wines,’ writes Neal Martin of Vinous. Don’t miss out on discovering lesser-known properties along with superstars such as Clinet, Duhart-Milon, Domaine de Chevalier and Ducru-Beaucaillou. Less sunny than 2015 and 2016, ‘2017 is all about finesse, perfume and aromatic intensity as opposed to weighty richness,’ writes Lisa Perotti-Brown for Wine Advocate.

Burgundy 2018: The producer vintage – R 1,000

Cape Town: Wednesday, 30 September at 18h00, Wine Cellar Observatory

Highlighting the great producers of Henri Boillot, Joseph Drouhin and Olivier Leflaive, we will taste both 2018 whites and reds from across the famous villages of the Côte d'Or. Neal Martin suggests 2018 is ‘a producer-centric vintage, the quality determined by each grower’s tenets and practices’. We will also highlight a few later releases from Domaine Comtes Lafon and Hubert Lamy!

Rhône 2017: Small but perfectly formed – R 800

Cape Town: Wednesday, 21 October at 18h00, Wine Cellar Observatory

Johannesburg: Thursday, 22 October at 18h00, Dunkeld West Centre

Completing a trio of great vintages, Wine Cellar is massively excited to taste through the 2017s from legends such as Jamet, Clape, Graillot, Chapoutier and our go-to value offerings from Pesquié. ‘In 2017, you know you're in the Northern Rhône,’ suggests Jean-Paul Jamet about this more classically styled vintage. We’ll journey from north to south, explore the great appellations of Côte-Rôtie and Cornas down to Châteauneuf-du-Pape. Expect great value amongst pinnacle quality and a peek at the early-release 2018s.

Piedmont 2016: One of the greatest modern-day vintages – R 800

Cape Town: Wednesday, 11 November at 18h00, Wine Cellar Observatory

Johannesburg: Thursday, 12 November at 18h00, Dunkeld West Centre

Dubbed the ‘perfect year’ by critics and ‘the vintage we’ve been waiting for’ by producers, 2016 has made a reputation for itself as one of the greatest modern-day vintages in Piedmont. With ripeness to match the very good 2015s, the 2016s also offer firmer tannin and higher acidity. Don’t miss this rare opportunity to taste all the region’s top cru Barolos and Barbarescos! Featured families include Marengo, Vajra, Baudana, Negri, Cesare and the world’s best co-operative, Produttori del Barbaresco.
