Two years ago we uncovered an excellent parcel of maturing Saint-Émilion at a super price after tasting through hundreds of Bordeaux. We are delighted to offer another small tranche of this delicious claret.
Dating back to 1802, Château Trimoulet is a small, relatively unknown property in Saint-Émilion Grand Cru owned by the Jean family. Importantly the high-flying consultant Nicolas Thienpont, who is also the owner and producer of Pavie-Macquin and Beausejour, produced the 2011 Trimoulet and there was a marked upswing in quality.
Merlot dominates the Bordeaux Right Bank, but it offers different expressions depending on the soil type and terroir. Trimoulet is in the northern part of Saint-Émilion where the soils are slightly lighter with silty clay and gravel.
This is a medium-bodied Bordeaux, made in a traditional style, from what would be regarded as a classic vintage on the Right Bank. A blend of 75% Merlot and 25% Cabernet Franc, it offers classically mineral notes, ‘forest floor’ and fine aromatics.
We drank another bottle last week and were blown away by its depth and poise. Although it is ready to drink now, it has finely-structured tannins that should allow for another decade of ageing. This is a classy Bordeaux at an affordable price.
