Mature, classic Pinot Noir parcel
Wine Cellar has unearthed a fantastic, mature, classically-styled Pinot Noir from the legend, Jan 'Boland' Coetzee, at a killer price. It’s no secret that ‘Oom Jan’ has preferred the more Burgundian face of Pinot Noir ever since his stint at Joseph Drouhin in the early 1980s. Bottled under the 'Limited Release' label due to its backward styling (i.e. requires ageing), the 2012 deviates from today’s more fruit-driven style.
For those who enjoy a more savoury, oak-matured Pinot Noir with a Burgundian slant, this is just for you!
From clones 777 and 115 planted on a south-facing slope in front of the Vriesenhof cellar, the 2012 Limited Release was fermented in seasoned Burgundian oak and aged for 2 years. With time in the bottle, it is now starting to blossom and offers a kaleidoscope of complexity. Though the oak is still present, there is good integration of acidity, tannin, fruit and meaty nuances. Forest floor, slight reduction, dark olive and earthiness lead to a deep and rich palate. A towering wine with ample tannin structure for at least another decade of ageing. Tremendous value.
