The Cabernet Franc is pure class with hallmark pencil shavings and graphite. The palate is what really impresses here, with a depth of fruit and weight that you’d be hard-pressed to find elsewhere. Though delicious now, its fine structure sets it up for another decade of ageing.
The Merlot has a cool, red-fruited centre and a savoury bay leaf edge that adds herbal complexity. It’s produced from Merlot vines that have the lowest number of sunlight hours on the property, resulting in a great homogeneity of ripeness that’s rarely achieved locally. There's no better mature Merlot in SA at this price!
In 2003, Glenelly was acquired by Madame May de Lencquesaing of Bordeaux’s Château Pichon Longueville Comtesse de Lalande. Her vision was to transform the property into one of the finest in Stellenbosch, and Glenelly has certainly repaid this faith. Inflationary pressure, as well as price repositioning for most of South Africa’s top producers, means finding value is becoming more difficult. But look no further – these are wines to stock up on by the caseload.
