Hartenberg Gravel Hill Shiraz 2015 – The best yet?
Arriving at Hartenberg in 1993, Carl Schultz quickly realised the special nature of a gravelly, low-yielding Shiraz vineyard planted on ‘koffieklip’. This vineyard quickly found its way onto the 1997 CWG Auction and now holds the record for the longest Guild ‘accreditation’. The non-CWG version is as equally sought-after and we’re excited to have 15 cases of the fine 2015 release.
While Carl’s polished, long-ageing and powerful style is still at the fore, 2 decades later, there has been rewarding refinement. We believe the 2015 is the most accomplished yet – primarily offering a more savoury rather than sweet-fruited expression at 14% alcohol. It is remarkably youthful, cutting an immaculate balance of pure fruit with haunting complexity and colossal, yet uber-fine tannins. It is set to age well for at least 2 decades and offers great investment potential. There is little doubt that this is one of SA’s best.
We also offer small volumes of The Stork 2015, which is planted solely on clay-rich ‘terra rossa’ type soils. Ripening a full month later, it is slightly more perfumed and sweet-fruited, but no less impressive! See all Hartenberg wines here.
