2020 Burgundy: Henri Boillot ‘continues to make stunning wines’ – Allen Meadows

Dear *|FNAME|*,

Burgundy’s Henri and Guillaume Boillot have built an extraordinary reputation in a short space of time – it’s been thrilling to watch the rise of this superstar domaine. The quality of their 2020 whites is extremely high, and ‘the best almost shimmer with mineralité,’ notes Neal Martin.

The classically styled and remarkably fresh 2020s remind Guillaume of the 2014 vintage. Don’t miss their Bourgogne Chardonnay‘one of the year's best value wines’, according to Decanter, or their 96-point Grand Crus – Corton-Charlemagne and Bâtard-Montrachet. Their Puligny-Montrachet 1er Cru Les Combettes has focused power with a ‘hugely long finale’, writes Allen Meadows of Burghound, and the Meursault 1er Cru Les Genevrières is seriously elegant and floral, but would need at least five years of patience to uncoil.

Their Pinot Noirs saw low yields in 2020. Drier conditions concentrated the sugars and acidity, producing succulent, vivid wines. Boillot’s 2020 Bourgogne Pinot Noir is ‘a very fine Bourgogne and worth checking out’, says Meadows. The very best reminds Jasper Morris MW of 2005 – ‘These are wines with immense ageing potential.’ Whilst their Volnays always shine, Neal Martin feels that ‘Pommard is one to look out for’ in 2020.

‘As the comments and ratings confirm, I was, as usual, impressed with the Boillot 2020s, says Meadows. We couldn’t agree more! See the entire selection here.

Tasting notes

Henri Boillot Bourgogne Chardonnay 2020

‘This is one of the year's best value wines, with bright, lemony fruit and fresh floral notes, uncomplicated by heavy oak spice since no new casks were used in the fermentation. Although this is produced from purchased grapes and must, it receives the same care as the domaine-bottled selections. Surprisingly light and fresh for the vintage, the Boillot Bourgogne Blanc provides plenty of crisp, refreshing pleasure at a remarkably accessible price point.’Charles Curtis MW, Decanter, 93/100

Henri Boillot Meursault 1er Cru Les Genevrières 2020

‘A naturally exotic nose offers up hints of freshly sliced ginger, jasmine tea, pear and plenty of floral elements. The more subtle and notably finer medium weight flavors exude a light minerality on the caressing and seductive finish that is lemony, bone-dry and sneaky long finale. This is compact and serious, and I would suggest allowing this a minimum of 5 years of cellaring first.’Allen Meadows, Burghound.com, 94/100

Henri Boillot Corton Charlemagne Grand Cru 2020

‘Subtle notes of mineral reduction and wood toast can be found on the aromas of green apple, clove and white flowers. The wonderfully intense, focused and muscular large-scaled flavors brim with both dry extract and an almost aggressively minerality on the markedly dry but not really austere finale. Like the Chevalier and Montrachet, this beauty of a Corton-Charlemagne is presently very tightly wound and is going to need extended patience to arrive at its peak. This too should be gorgeous in time.’Allen Meadows, Burghound.com, 96/100

Henri Boillot Bâtard-Montrachet Grand Cru 2020

‘A slightly riper yet still very fresh, cool and pretty with acacia blossom, citrus confit and a beautiful array of spice wisps. There is terrific size, weight and mid-palate density to the big-bodied and powerful flavors that culminate in a lemon, very clean and hugely long finale. This is like a block at present and I wouldn't touch a bottle for the first 7 to 8 years. In a word, excellent.’Allen Meadows, Burghound.com, 96/100

Henri Boillot Puligny-Montrachet 1er Cru Les Combettes 2020

‘A slightly riper nose features notes of white peach, citrus confit, anise and a pretty array of floral elements. The more refined and almost delicate and lilting flavors possess an absolutely gorgeous mouthfeel while displaying focused power on the bone-dry and hugely long finale. This possesses seriously good development potential, and this is one to strongly consider.’Allen Meadows, Burghound.com, 95/100

Henri Boillot Bourgogne Pinot Noir 2020

‘This accessible, forward Bourgogne Pinot Noir is made in a Côte de Beaune style, using grapes from Santenay Premier Cru, Chassagne and Volnay village sites. No new wood is used in the maturation, allowing the very pretty cherry fruit to shine through, sustained by a fine line of tannin on the palate.’Decanter, 90/100

Henri Boillot Volnay 1er Cru Les Chevrets 2020

‘An elegant, pure, ripe and airy nose combines notes of red and dark pinot, anise, violet and rose petal. The vibrant and lilting yet solidly concentrated medium-bodied flavors display excellent length on the saline-inflected, firm and impressively persistent finale. This is terrific and while it's certainly firm, there is so much supporting sap that it could be approached young if desired. Lovely juice.’Allen Meadows, Burghound.com, 93/100

‘An emperor would be pleased with the intensity of this purple robe. The fruit is the most concentrated to date, and picked at the perfect time. Heady, intense, perfectly judged raspberry. This is spectacular. Not over the top, ripe tannins, just the right point of acidity, and excellent persistence. Guillaume speaks of delicacy and I can see what he means despite the Boillot style which is too intense to be designated delicate.’Jasper Morris, Inside Burgundy, 93-96/100

Henri Boillot Pommard 1er Cru Clos Blanc 2020

‘A somber and decidedly restrained nose consists of poached plum, red cherry and plenty of warm earth nuances. I very much like the texture to the solidly concentrated medium weight flavors that display sneaky good length where the only reproach is a touch of warmth.’Allen Meadows, Burghound.com, 91/100
