‘Deserving of SA icon status’: Cape Point Vineyards’ 5-star Isliedh 2018

With its pedigree, terroir expression and evident consistency vintage after vintage, the Cape Point Vineyards Isliedh is now firmly established as one of SA’s finest whites. To go along with its Platter’s 5* and 96/100 from Tim Atkin, the 2018 also received 95/100 and ‘Best Wine Overall’ in Winemag’s Sauvignon Blanc Sémillon blend report.

Always poised and finely crafted, with complex aromas of white flowers, blackcurrant, fynbos and distinct smokiness, the 2018 Isliedh is seamless on entry with delineated fruit purity, linear acid structure and a moreish salinity on the finish. This is a SA benchmark. While both cellar and investment-worthy, it is first and foremost delicious!

Cape Point Vineyards Isliedh 2018 - Platter's 5*

Produced from vineyards established by Rosa Kruger, the 2018 Isliedh is sourced from south-facing vineyards situated high on the Cape Point peninsula overlooking Noordhoek. This harsh, marginal climate is perfect for producing wines of character and, now under the stewardship of the gifted Riandri Visser, the Isliedh has become arguably SA’s finest Bordeaux white. As for the 2018, it’s one of the finest to date but, as with so many of our great wines, its availability is limited.

Cape Point Vineyards, Isliedh 2018
White blend, deserving of SA icon status: with 9 maximum 5-star ratings since 2003 debut. 2018 picked from one block over 5 days. Barrel-fermented Sauvignon (40% new oak) with 25% Sémillon in clay pot. Core of sweet ripe fruit; very bright, with a stony freshness. Oak scarcely noticeable except in breadth & silkiness. Long-lingering. Will greatly benefit from good few years in bottle. – Platter's Guide, 5* (95/100)

Arguably the finest white Bordeaux blend in the country – ‘it's in the top one’, as the English football manager, Brian Clough, used to say – this 30% new oak fermented cuvée of Sauvignon Blanc with 20% Sémillon is rich, saline, textured and beautifully wooded with remarkable line and length. Drink 2020-28. – Tim Atkin MW, 96/100

Best wine overall in the Sauv-Sém Blend/Wooded Sauvignon Blanc Report. What would happen after the 2016 departure of the highly skilled Duncan Savage from this Noordhoek property? His former assistant Riandri Visser took over and the wines simply go from strength to strength as this blend of 75% Sauvignon Blanc and 25% Sémillon proves. – Christian Eedes, 95/100
