2021 is ‘by far the best vintage to date’ enthuses Christian Eedes, awarding the newly released Leeu Passant Stellenbosch Cabernet Sauvignon an epic 96 points! This is a wine of power, ‘faultless structure and poise’.

We tasted the 2021 with Andrea and Chris Mullineux last month, and the excitement in the room was palpable. Focused and seemingly effortless, aromas of crushed bay leaves and cassis give way to cigar, plums, lavender and earthiness on the palate, ending with fine-grained tannins. This is bound to age for decades but has the finesse and generosity to suit earlier drinking.

The Leeu Passant range is a celebration of the Cape’s heritage, and the result of Chris and Andrea’s careful discovery of what made the legendary SA wines of the past so successful. After experimenting with 20 different vineyards over the years, the fruit for the 2021 Cabernet Sauvignon was sourced exclusively from three Helderberg blocks. The couple love this region for the freshness, aromatic complexity, and graphite spectrum it brings to the wine. Regal and confident, the 2021 is a must-have for your collection.

Leeu Passant Stellenbosch Cabernet Sauvignon 2021

‘Grapes from three Helderberg blocks. Matured for 12 months in oak of which 30% was new before being transferred to 5 000-litre wooden vats for a further 12 months. Attractive top notes of fresh herbs and rose before red and black berries. The palate is medium bodied with great fruit purity, fresh acidity and firm but not astringent tannins.
