Newman, Monthélie 2013
Newman's 2013 Monthelie is rich, powerful and seductive, with a darker profile than is usually found in this wine. Dark red cherries, plums, spices and licorice all flesh out in a decidedly large-scaled Monthelie from Chris Newman. 2015 – 2021. – Antonio Galloni, Vinous, 90-92/100
Newman, Pommard Vieilles Vignes 2013
* Notes on the 2012 vintage: The 2012 Pommard Vieilles Vignes is another huge, exuberant wine from Newman. Beautifully resonant and powerful, the 2012 impresses for its depth and structure. Far from an easygoing wine, Newman's Pommard is endowed with both tremendous depth and nuance. The firm, massive tannins need a few years to settle down though. 2018 – 2032. – Antonio Galloni, Vinous, 90-92/100
Newman, Beaune 1er Cru Clos des Avaux 2013
The 2013 Beaune Clos des Avaux is one of the more lifted, aromatic wines in this range. Crushed flowers and sweet red-fleshed fruit notes abound, but the 2013 comes across as a bit raw and not fully formed just yet. Still, there is a lot to look forward to, especially if things meld together over time, as I suspect they will. 2016 – 2025. - Antonio Galloni, Vinous, 88-90/100
Newman, Mazis-Chambertin Grand Cru 2013
Newman's 2013 Mazis-Chambertin is surprisingly powerful and supple at this stage, with quite a bit of density on the mid-palate and finish, but less in the way of the characteristic Mazis aromatics. Although a bit atypical, the Mazis holds considerable promise. If the aromatics open up, the 2013 will be even better than this note suggests. 2018 – 2028. - Antonio Galloni, Vinous, 92-94/100
Newman, Bonnes-Mares Grand Cru 2013
An exotic melange of blue/purplish fruit, spice, new leather, graphite, menthol and smoke takes center stage in the 2013 Bonnes-Mares. A wild, powerful wine, the 2013 is a striking Bonnes-Mares endowed with considerable personality. The 2013 finishes with substantial drive, gravitas and overall intensity. 2023 – 2033. – Antonio Galloni, Vinous, 93-95/100
