Magical Burgundy parcel at crazy prices

Wine Cellar has just received a small parcel of incredibly well-priced Burgundies from some of the best communes in Burgundy. In 1952, Robert Newman started buying Grand Cru parcels in Gevrey-Chambertin and Chambolle-Musigny, forming the Beaune-based Domaine Newman. The organically farmed property, run by full-spirited Chris Newman along with minimal interventionist winemaking by high-flying Jane Eyre, produced quintessential Burgundy for many decades. The domaine was recently sold, however, and all Newman stocks have been cleared. These prices are 30 – 40% below market prices and so we are delighted to offer 5 wines from 'the fairytale vintage of 2013' as per Jancis Robinson.

Magical 2013 Burgundy parcel at crazy prices - Domaine Newman

Situated between Meursault and Volnay, Monthélie offers a value alternative to the softer wines of Volnay for example. From 35 – 50-year-old vines, it offers dazzling, pure fruit with enormous drinkability. If you are looking for a ‘house Burgundy’, this is it!

The most powerful reds of the Côte de Beaune emanate from Pommard, where complex soils of iron-rich clay produce deeply coloured, relatively tannic wines. This serious Pommard from ‘Vieille Vignes’ (old vines) planted in 1921 and 1950, needs another 5 years and will age for more than a decade to come.

The vineyard for Beaune Premier Cru Clos des Avaux is closest to the domaine; just outside the city. It was planted in 1964 and offers a more silky, feminine expression for drinking over the next decade.

The Mazis-Chambertin Grand Cru vineyard is made from 21 rows adjacent to the more famous Chambertin-Clos de Bèze. This is a powerful, elegant and tannic Burgundy that will age gracefully for 2 decades.

Finally, Newman’s Bonnes-Mares Grand Cru 2013 is crafted from 2 parcels in Chambolle-Musigny – one being next to de Vogüé!. The wines may be a little lighter in colour and less tannic than Gevrey-Chambertin but with sublime concentration of fruit. One of Burgundy’s greatest vineyards at this price is, frankly, a bargain!

Newman, Monthélie 2013
Newman's 2013 Monthelie is rich, powerful and seductive, with a darker profile than is usually found in this wine. Dark red cherries, plums, spices and licorice all flesh out in a decidedly large-scaled Monthelie from Chris Newman. 2015 – 2021. – Antonio Galloni, Vinous, 90-92/100

Newman, Pommard Vieilles Vignes 2013
* Notes on the 2012 vintage: The 2012 Pommard Vieilles Vignes is another huge, exuberant wine from Newman. Beautifully resonant and powerful, the 2012 impresses for its depth and structure. Far from an easygoing wine, Newman's Pommard is endowed with both tremendous depth and nuance. The firm, massive tannins need a few years to settle down though. 2018 – 2032. – Antonio Galloni, Vinous, 90-92/100

Newman, Beaune 1er Cru Clos des Avaux 2013
The 2013 Beaune Clos des Avaux is one of the more lifted, aromatic wines in this range. Crushed flowers and sweet red-fleshed fruit notes abound, but the 2013 comes across as a bit raw and not fully formed just yet. Still, there is a lot to look forward to, especially if things meld together over time, as I suspect they will. 2016 – 2025. - Antonio Galloni, Vinous, 88-90/100

Newman, Mazis-Chambertin Grand Cru 2013
Newman's 2013 Mazis-Chambertin is surprisingly powerful and supple at this stage, with quite a bit of density on the mid-palate and finish, but less in the way of the characteristic Mazis aromatics. Although a bit atypical, the Mazis holds considerable promise. If the aromatics open up, the 2013 will be even better than this note suggests. 2018 – 2028. - Antonio Galloni, Vinous, 92-94/100

Newman, Bonnes-Mares Grand Cru 2013
An exotic melange of blue/purplish fruit, spice, new leather, graphite, menthol and smoke takes center stage in the 2013 Bonnes-Mares. A wild, powerful wine, the 2013 is a striking Bonnes-Mares endowed with considerable personality. The 2013 finishes with substantial drive, gravitas and overall intensity. 2023 – 2033. – Antonio Galloni, Vinous, 93-95/100
