Puygueraud 2018 – Absolutely delicious

‘This is great stuff and highly drinkable’ – Jane Anson, Decanter, 93/100

Dear *|FNAME|*,

Puygueraud 2018 is one of our go-to Bordeaux reds thanks to its incredible price-to-deliciousness ratio. From the Côtes de Francs on the Right Bank of the Dordogne River Valley, this sub-R400 beauty is ‘layered and concentrated’, writes James Suckling (93/100). It ‘packs a serious punch’, agrees Antonio Galloni. Though approachable on release, these wines are able to age well beyond a decade thanks to their Bordeaux DNA.

The warm 2018 vintage produced generous wines on the Right Bank with wonderful texture and length – buy them by the caseload! To help you stock up, we’re offering a free bottle of Puygueraud 2018 for every 12 ordered. Buy 12, pay for 11 with coupon code FREEPUYGUERAUD18.

When George Thienpont arrived in 1946, Puygueraud was in poor condition. The farm and 15th century château needed serious attention. Over the following decades, he built up the soils with a polyculture approach, including the rearing of cattle. The ‘70s saw an extensive vineyard replanting programme and 1983 marked the first vintage under the father-and-son partnership of George and Nicolas Thienpont. Today the polyculture approach continues with the growth of organic kiwis. Barley is used on all fallow plots and the dried barley seeds are then sown back into the vineyards to continue building the soils.

Tasting notes

Puygueraud Francs Côtes de Bordeaux 2018

‘Aromas of blackberries, dried lavender, black olives, tobacco, herbs and some smoked meat. It’s medium-to full-bodied with firm, fine-grained tannins. Layered and concentrated with a sleek, savory finish. 85% merlot, 12% cabernet franc and 3% malbec. Better from 2022.’James Suckling, 93/100

‘This is great stuff and highly drinkable with a wonderful richness on the nose and palate. It’s pretty fierce in fact and has real impact with the austerity of the mid palate quickly filled out by rich sweet black cherry fruit and a deeply spiced finish. The harvest took place between 24 September and 5 October.’Jane Anson, Decanter, 93/100
