Wine Cellar Weekly: SA benchmark pre-release, wine investment simplified & Stellenbosch revolutionaries

In many ways, Kanonkop is the embodiment of SA Pinotage. We're excited share a pre-release offer on their captivating 2019 Pinotage. Staying in Stellenbosch, we have the 2020 releases from Craven. From Walker Bay, try the Maanschijn blends created by two high school friends who focus on low intervention, artisanal wines. Lastly, a classic Chianti that's perfect for your dinner table this autumn.

When it comes to fine wine investment, the market just keeps growing. The demand for SA wines continues to rise and we've seen an explosion of fine wines at premium prices. Our experienced team has combined the best local, investment wines in our April PIP. We also trade in rare, older-vintage wines and continuously have new additions to our brokerage selection.

Kanonkop, Pinotage 2019
R 450 per bottle

This is a beautiful vintage of a South African benchmark. There is a lot of sumptuous dark fruit and it is wonderfully complex. The tannins are impressive, adding precision to the richer, fuller palate. One of the most beguiling vintages in recent years. Pre-release, available from 1 May 2021.

The 94-point Firs Syrah – a standout for the Wine Cellar team – shows complexity with layers of spice, minerality and savoury, coated red fruit. Another top pick, the Karibib Chenin Blanc shows poised, white stone fruit with delicate, honey-like blossoms and a refreshing fynbos note. Limited availability.

Querciabella, Chianti Classico 2017
R 365 per bottle

‘I’m a big fan of this,’ writes UK wine writer Jamie Goode. This biodynamically farmed, 100% Sangiovese is a classic Chianti – floral and red fruited, the tannins and fresh acidity add to the poise and nuance of this wine. Antonio Galloni writes, ‘Querciabella 2017 is one of the more refined, restrained Chianti Classicos readers will come across in this vintage.’ A terrific wine to have on the table during autumn.
