'Some winemakers try to over extract their Grenache, but Marelise Niemann is not one of them. Made with grapes from the Paardeberg and (a minor component) the Voor Paardeberg, this is pale, fresh and intense, with savoury red cherry and raspberry flavours a hint of oak and clove and pepper spice from 30% whole bunches. Drink 2022-26.' – Tim Atkin MW, SA Special Report 2020, 93/100

'Feisty yet focused, trademark Niemann power without force in 2018. Rose, white pepper & buchu perfumes kept in line by lively acidity & tannic grip from extended skin contact. Now all Swartland fruit, 30% wholebunch, 15 months old oak.' – Platter's Guide, 4.5* (93/100)

'The 2018 Grenache Noir, from low-yielding bush vines in Swartland and Voor-Paardeberg, has a wonderful bouquet of cranberry and wild strawberry fruit, very well defined and delineated. You could nose this all day! The palate is medium-bodied with fine-grained tannins, a lightly peppered entry and a beautifully proportioned finish. Bravo, Marelise! Drinkn 2022-2032.' – Neal Martin, Vinous, 93/100 (Apr 2021)

'Rose and cherry with raspberry boiled sweets alongside savoury fynbos, dark chocolate and violets. Light bodied, crunchy and fresh with more bright red fruit on the palate. This primary vibrancy makes the wine accessible early but bracing acidity and a pleasantly pine-green phenolic grip adds complexity and promises ageing potential. A saline and moreish finish.' – Winemaker

Producer information Marelise Niemann began her Momento brand in 2013. Marelise has a passion for Grenache, which she realised after working with Eben Sadie in Priorat in 2010. Grenache is not a widely planted grape in South Africa, but her passion has led her to find the only Grenache Gris vineyard which is located in Voor-Paardeberg. She is lucky enough to work with vines all over the Western Cape which are unique expressions of their regions and terroir.
