Shannon, Mount Bullet Merlot 2017 Bottle size: 750mlSouth Africa, Elgin
'Always a big, sumptuous wine. 2017 has 15% alcohol yet its fine integrated acidity & general balance add a lively lightness. The grainy tannins are firm but supple, the flavours rich & deep but there’s also restraint. Oak is obvious, but should integrate in time.' – Platter's Guide, 5* (96/100)
'Picked comparatively early but still showing over 15% alcohol in 2017, Mount Bullet is typically plush and intense. Produced from five different clones, it's brooding, tannic and concentrated, with a sheen of 30% new wood, sinewy, grippy tannins and enough acidity to freshen and lengthen the finish. Drink 2022-27.' – Tim Atkin MW, SA Special Report 2020, 94/100
'Incorporates five different clones. Matured for 20 months in French oak, 25% new. Dark fruit, earth, vanilla and spice on the nose while the palate is rich and broad with plenty of sweet, luscious fruit and smooth tannins, the finish long and dry. Plenty of wow factor.' – Winemag Prescient Merlot Report 2020, Top 10

The name Shannon pays homage to the owner’s ancestors who come from Irish descent. Located in the Elgin Valley within the Kogelberg Biosphere, Shannon Vineyards’ unique terroir speaks for itself. With the Peninsula Dam creating the eastern boundary of the farm, the vineyards experience a cooling blanket of mist which is such a great geographical influencer on the farm’s climate, that Shannon has included the river mist in their logo. As such, the winemaking follows a minimal intervention approach to allow the different terroirs to be expressed in the wines.
