'One of my ‘go to’ wines when I see it on a restaurant wine list, this intensely perfumed Syrah comes from seven vineyards, mostly on schist soils. Made with 90% whole bunches, it has more tannin than you think at first, layers of spice, violet and blackberry fruit and a refreshing tang. Drink: 2020-25.' – Tim Atkin MW, 93/100
'Combining grapes from seven vineyards planted variously on shale, schist and granite across the Swartland, vinification involved 90% whole-bunch fermentation before maturation lasting 14 months in a combination of 225- and 500-litre barrels as well as 2000L-litre foudre, 15% new. The nose shows red fruit, cinnamon and white pepper plus a hint of fynbos while the palate is juicy and sweet-fruited with plenty of volume and surprisingly soft tannins. 'Much has been said of the ‘Goldilocks’ 2015 vintage, it’s one of the greatest of all time. 2017 seems to be next in line. Possibly fresher and more defined with the same typical Swartland perfume and balance as 2015 but more defined and full-bodied in 2017. Grapes for our Syrah come from seven sustainably farmed vineyard parcels in different parts of the Swartland: four parcels planted in the stony Shale and Schist based soils of the Kasteelberg; two parcels of dry-land, bush vines grown in the decomposed Granite of the Paardeberg; and one on the rolling, iron-rich soils west of Malmesbury. Vines are aged between 22 and 30 years. Grapes were harvested between the 26th January and 15th February 2017.
With over a decade of dedication to Syrah in the Swartland, and considering the consistency and track record across their various bottlings, Chris and Andrea Mullineux are possibly SA’s best Syrah producers today. At the cutting-edge of SA fine wine, the Mullineuxs have received many ground-breaking awards and, since 2007, have focused their Swartland efforts on Syrah and Chenin Blanc. Their extensive knowledge of Swartland soils, and what Andrea calls a ‘growing technical maturity‘, has consistently led to the release of some of the most definitive expressions of the Swartand’s various terroirs. Produced in minute quantities, these are must-have, collectors’ wines.
