Mvemve Raats, De Compostella 2018 Bottle size: 750mlSouth Africa, Stellenbosch
'The good reputation of 2017 is now well established whereas 2018 is generally viewed as having been “challenging”. That said, the recently released MR de Compostella from Bruwer Raats and company, supersedes the 2017 in quality, at least at this early stage. Somewhat surprisingly given the amount of Cab Franc, the result is a muscular, full-bodied wine. Red and black berries, violets, some leafy character and cigar box on the nose while the palate is substantial but also entirely seamless – good depth of fruit and fine tannins. It’s an impeccably well managed offering as followers of this label have come to expect.' – Christian Eedes, Winemag.co.za, 94/100
'Notes of oak spice and graphite introduce a brooding mélange of dark fruit, hinting at the charming and plush textured palate to follow. It is quite inviting and seductive at present with an abundance of attractive aromas leading to a taut entry over granular and dense tannins. All balanced by a finely weaved acidity, ensuring freshness and vibrancy. The overall impression is of a wine of considerable power, yet expressing a refined weightlessness. It is a great MR, similar to the highly praised 2008 vintage and will offer great drinking for the next 10 – 15 years. Effortless density, while also seamless and linear. 14.5% alc.' – James Pietersen (April 2021)
'Deep, dark and intense ruby colour. Blackcurrant and black cherry fruit with hints of violets, cedar and cinnamon. Rich and complex with mineral, blackberry fruit and dark chocolate on the finish. Harmoniously composed of the five Bordeaux varieties to ensure none dominate. This wine shows a consistent, linear flavour profile with a polished and well-defined finish.' – Winemaker
