'Different aspects of 3 granite vineyards add distinctive layers, south-facing slopes lending racy acidity, northerly ones giving weight & texture. White peach & lemon-lime citrus, roasted nut & oatmeal, outstanding 2019 as multidimensional & involving as 2018 (4.5 stars, 94 pts), & even more savoury & vivacious. Bunch pressed & wild fermented in barrel.' – Platter's Guide, 5* (98/100)

'So much is written about the quality of the Newton Johnsons' Pinot Noirs that people tend to forget how good their Chardonnays can be. This hails from three separate parcels on, variously, clay, granite and stony soils and is a wonderful expression of the quality of the vintage. Pear, wet stone and orange zest flavours are framed by 35% new wood, with low yields contributing concentration alongside the freshness and zip of the cool year. Drink 2021-27.' – Tim Atkin MW, SA Special Report 2020, 95/100

'The 2019 vintage is particularly well conceived, winemaking involving spontaneous fermentation and maturation in 35% new oak. The nose shows pear and citrus, the merest hint of flinty reduction plus subtle notes of vanilla and oatmeal. The palate, meanwhile, possesses a dense core of fruit but is not too weighty. The wine has plenty of drive thanks to a good line of acidity while the finish is long and pithy. It’s a vivid, rather lovely rendition of the variety.' – Christian Eedes,, 94/100

'The 2019 Chardonnay Newton Johnson Family Vineyards, matured with 35% new oak, has a slightly more austere bouquet than the Southend Chardonnay, steely and focused, almost Puligny-like in style. The palate is very well balanced and refined, with a perfect line of acidity. Saline and very animated, leading to a long, spicy finish. Absolutely fantastic - that’s all there is to say. Drink 2022-2036.' – Neal Martin, Vinous, 94/100 (Apr 2021)
