Paul Cluver, Riesling 2020 Bottle size: 750mlSouth Africa, Elgin
'The wine is pale in colour, with a beautiful green tint. This is an expressive wine with a melody of fresh fruit and citrus blossom notes. The palate is delicate with elegantly clean and zesty lime notes with great textural feel of the mid palate. There is a great interplay between the naturally retained residual sugar and acidity. Generally regarded as restrained, it displays typical Riesling ‘nervousness’. The mineral core, which is linked to the shale rich soils in which the vines grow, adds great complexity, structure and the lingering after taste.' – Winemaker
Notes on the 2018 vintage:
'The Cluvers have reduced their Riesling range in recent year, but this halbtrocken style with 19 grams of sugar and refreshing carbon dioxide is still one of the best in the Cape. Racy, juicy and pithy, with lime and blackcurrant leaf notes and very well-judged sweetness. Drink 2020-25.' – Tim Atkin MW, SA Special Report 2019, 93/100
'Excellent varietal expression. Aromatic & floral 2018 has citrus blossom, perfumed apple & lime with sweet spice undertone from quarter old-oaked component. Semi-dry style, the sugar effortlessly matched by zippy acidity (19.5, 7.9 g/l).' – Platter's guide, 4.5* (93/100)
