'The John X Merriman is a powerful wine that rewards aging. In its youth the wine is worth decanting and expresses cassis, black currant and dark fruits complemented with cigar tobacco and sour cherry notes. As the wine ages and its fine grained tannins soften a softer more savoury palate develops revealing wonderful drinkability and tertiary complexity. Aging Potential: 10 to 15 years from vintage under ideal cellaring conditions.' – Winemaker

Notes on the 2018 vintage:
'It may not (quite) scale the same heights as the 2017, but this five-way Bordeaux red blend is still a very assured wine from the Barlows. Cassis and red berry fruit flavours are framed by 35% new wood, with a sprig of mint adding extra perfume. Drink 2022-27.' – Tim Atkin MW, SA Special Report 2020, 93/100

Producer information Rustenberg, located in the Simonsberg Mountain valley, was founded in 1682. In 1941, Peter and Pamela Barlow bought Rustenberg, as well as another farm which had originally been a part of Rustenberg. They joined the two properties and have now been running Rustenberg for over 70 years. Rustenberg is a leading producer of iconic, long-ageing wines. Stellenbosch is home to some of the finest Cabernet Sauvignon terroir in the world but very few sites are more special than Rustenberg’s Peter Barlow single vineyard.
