The Signature wines are the very best that Eben aims to make. Since the maiden 2000 vintage, the Sadie Family Columella has constantly changed to better express the Swartland. It has since become a modern icon and is one of SA’s most sought-after and collected wines.
'The percentage of Syrah decreases every year - it was once 80% and is now closer to 45% - allowing Eben Sadie to play with other Mediterranean grapes, namely Mourvèdre, Grenache, Carignan, Cinsault and Tinta Barocca. Remarkably well balanced and refined given the heat and dryness of the vintage, this is a scented, floral, nuanced red with red cherry and mulberry fruit, fine tannins and a lift of stony minerality. 'The 2018 vintage of Columella is simply scintillating. A multi-vineyard, multi-varietal wine, the presence of Syrah is now down to approximately 45% while the other components are Carignan, Cinsault, Grenach, Mourvedre and Tinta Barocca, the idea being that all the grapes of the district should be represented. The nose is very expressive with notes of lavender, pomegranate, red cherry, raspberry and blackberry, olive, earth and spice while the palate has great density of fruit without sacrificing energy – pure, fresh and nicely grippy on the finish. 'The 2018 Columella was 50% destemmed, spent six weeks on the skins and was matured with 10% new oak. It has a very precise and extremely focused bouquet of blackberry and bilberry fruit, crushed stone and wilted rose petals, conveying wonderful energy and elegance. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannins, a fine bead of acidity, plenty of red fruit tinged with dried orange peel, cedar and hints of espresso, and a very persistent, structured finish that leaves black pepper on the aftertaste. 'The 2018 vintage of Columella is testimony to the bigger dynamics a regional blend has access to: the challenges brought about by the drought were completely addressed in this multi-vineyard, multi-varietal wine from across the Swartland. This may be the darkest fruit we have ever been able to capture at 13.5% alcohol and with the presence of Syrah in decline in the final blend, the influence of Grenache, Cinsaut, Carignan and Tinta Barocca is more pronounced. Our Mourvèdre component is the strongest it has ever been.
This 2018 bottling is a wine with a big temperament: explosive, but not excessive. It is like a plane with perfect aerodynamics, flying effortlessly; very much in line with the 2001, 2008 and 2011. Ageing required.' – Eben Sadie
