Clape, Saint-Péray 2018 Bottle size: 750mlFrance, Rhône
‘Pale, glistening gold. Vibrant, mineral-accented citrus and orchard fruits on the nose, along with hints of white flowers, nectarine and fennel that build with air. Juicy and seamless in texture, offering palate-staining pear, tangerine and honeysuckle flavors supported by a spine of smoky minerality. Finishes sappy, minerally and impressively long, showing fine definition and lingering florality. Drink 2022 – 2028.’ – Josh Raynolds, Vinous, 93/100
'Delightfully floral with flinty pear aromas. This is medium- to full-bodied, with good acidity and brightness of flavour into the finish. A vibrant and fresh style with no overt oak influence that is slightly stricter in style than an average year, and even better for it. A mix of old (60-year-old) vines and young (7-year-old) vines, all vinified in oak, no stainless steel. Drinking Window 2019 - 2022.' – Matt Walls, Decanter, 93/100
'Tank sample. Waxed lemons, fine herby note, lovely length and textural finesse. Dry, savoury, earthy finish. Classy and stylish.' – Richard Hemming MW, JancisRobinson.com, 17/20
About Domaine Auguste Clape:
The late Auguste Clape first went to Cornas in 1949 to marry his wife Henriette whose family owned 5 hectares of vines in the appellation. For many years, most growers in Cornas sold their fruit to négociants but Auguste became a local legend when he became the first to make wine from his own grapes instead of selling them. This decision set the tone for the future of Cornas. Today, his son Pierre-Marie and grandson Olivier Clape run the estate. Although they only farm 8 hectares, the tightly stacked and terraced vineyards present a huge challenge. The sharp precipices makes the use of any machinery impossible and, as a result, all the work must be done by hand. Clape’s powerful and authentic Syrahs, produced from the region’s best granite soils, have become world renowned and are among the most celebrated wines of France. They only produce two red cuvées – the Cornas, from 40 to 90-year-old vines, and the Cornas Renaissance which is produced from their younger vines.
