'W.O. Hemel-en-Aarde Valley. Matured for eight months in barrel, 25% new – same for counterpart below. Pear and citrus but also undertones of vanilla and struck-match reduction on the nose while the palate has lovely fruit purity, driving acidity and a pithy finish. Lean in the sense.' – Christian Eedes, Winemag.co.za, 94/100

'Vrede Chardonnay – or Peace Chardonnay – hails from a northeast-facing slope in the Hemel-en-Aarde Valley with low-vigour, stony, clay-rich Bokkeveld shale soil. Storm Vrede Chardonnay 2020 is viscous, with citrus, lime, lemon and white pear. Undertones of ginger and spice, subtle wood and fresh, zesty minerality.' – Storm Wines

Producer information Hannes Storm has spent nearly 2 decades in the pursuit of Pinot Noir and Chardonnay perfection. No single SA winemaker is more dedicated or focused on growing and vinifying Pinot and it shows. After 12 years as winemaker at Hamilton Russell, he started his eponymous label Storm Wines in 2012, and has since been focusing on the best-suited sites for this challenging variety. The remarkable Storm trio – the Ignis, Ridge and Vrede Pinot Noirs each come from one of the three appellations in the Hemel-en-Aarde. Storm Wines is the only producer with Pinots from each of these three appellations. If you have not tried these, you are missing out on South Africa’s benchmark Pinot Noirs.
