Taaibosch Crescendo 2019 – The most anticipated release of 2022

Taaibosch Crescendo 2019

The most anticipated release of 2022

It was with great excitement that we tasted the Taaibosch Crescendo 2019 last week. The maiden 2018 took the world by storm (TA 97, GS 95 & Platter’s five stars), and the 2019 is set to follow its success. It's a more refined offering than the already impressive 2018.

The Crescendo is the ultimate expression of Helderberg Cabernet Franc, backed by visionary international investment and re-imagined by Schalk-Willem Joubert. This remains the most exciting new project to come out of Stellenbosch in a decade. Taaibosch values custodianship and a sustainable approach – farming according to organic and biodynamic principles, and rehabiliting fynbos, to ensure a light footprint on the environment.

An immensely classy wine, this is bound to last for decades. ‘Intellectual,’ says Schalk-Willem. Like the previous vintage, the 2019 offers exceptional value.

The Taaibosch Crescendo continues the legacy of the Cordoba Crescendo, which was created by Chris Keet. The 2019 is mineral to start, with crushed stone and tilled earth complexity, followed by layer upon layer of backward fruit that slowly evolves as the wine opens in your glass. The vintage is a blend of 65% Cabernet Franc, 25% Merlot, and 10% Cabernet Sauvignon. The new oak component was dialled back in 2019, and it was matured in a combination of 225-litre oak barrels, 9000-litre foudres, and traditional 4500-litre cement tanks. Bordeaux-like, this authentic wine sets the bar very high for future releases.

The Taaibosch project was established by the Oddo family, who have a vibrant global wine vision. 'Favoring finesse and elegance, we reveal a unique style in line with our vision, blending local grape varieties,' explains Lorraine Oddo. Their wine ventures stetch as far as Sancerre and Provence in France, Stellenbosch in South Africa, and Sicily in Italy.
