Thierry Germain, Saumur-Champigny 2014 Bottle size: 750mlFrance, Loire
Tasting notes on the 2015 vintage:
This tank-fermented beauty from 25-year-old vines is a wonderful expression of the variety, its freshness and red berry fruit. Drinking it will move you to wonder why all wines can't be made naturally.
‘This has a light smoky edge, with hints of tobacco leaf and olive draped over a core of damson plum and bitter cherry fruit. Sleek and fresh in feel. Everything knits nicely through the alder-accented finish. Drink now through 2022.' – Wine Spectator, 91/100
‘A beautifully crafted wines, this has a certain angularity at first, but give it a few minutes and it reveals generosity, depth and texture and oh-so-mouthwatering Griotte cherry fruits. There is real hidden power here, you can feel it drawing through the wines, with a tightening on the finish that gives a beautiful point of focus and confidently suggests a long life ahead.’ – Decanter
About Thierry Germain:
Born to a family of Bordeaux wine growers, at 23 years of age, in 1991, Thierry Germain left the Gironde to start his own domaine, Domaine des Roches Neuves, in the Loire valley. He believes the richness of the soil is key to the finesse of Saumur wines. Thierry Germain along with the Foucault brothers (Clos Rouegard) in Saumur Champigny and Nicolas Joly in Savenières have been three of the biggest drivers for quality Cabernet Franc and Chenin in the Loire. All being true believers in the merits of biodynamics.
