Tokara, Director's Reserve White 750ml 2017
South Africa, StellenboschIt was also named Best Sauvignon Blanc-Sémillon Blend in the Winemag Prescient Top 20 Wines South Africa 2020 Report.
Blend: 69% Sauvignon Blanc and 31% Sémillon
Tasting notes:
'69% Sauvignon Blanc and 31% Semillon. Fermented and matured for nine months in 400-litre barrels, 29% new. A complex nose with top notes of honey and thatch before citrus, peach and blackcurrant plus a hint of flinty reduction. The palate is full but balanced with great purity of fruit, fresh acidity and a saline finish. Has a reined-in power about it.' – Winemag Prescient Top 20 Wines South Africa 2020 Report, 95/100
'Always among the best white Bordeaux blends in the Cape, this is especially impressive in 2017, one of the best recent vintages in South Africa. Combining Sauvignon Blanc with 31% Semillon, it's herbal, complex and layered, with some smoky wood undertones and flavours of toast and pink grapefruit. Drink 2020-25.' – Tim Atkin MW, SA Special Report 2020, 95/100
'Only best blocks, sauvignon leads, 31% semillon. 2017 has great precision, fruit is variety-true, lime & minerality, but pared down to the essence of freshness. Oak in support, but the fruit is too intense to allow much effect.' – Platter's Guide, 4.5* (94/100)
'Yellow plum, lime cordial and dried grass aromas. Rich and weighty on the palate with tart acidity and long finish.' – Decanter World Wine Awards, 94/100 (Silver)
'This is a blend of 69% Sauvignon blanc and 31% Sémillon. It was made from grapes grown on the highest slopes of Tokara’s Stellenbosch property. This wine displays a pale straw colour with striking brilliance that catches the light. The nose is complex exhibiting attractive notes of ripe passion fruit and pink grapefruit all intermingled with hints of lemon grass and freshly baked brioche. On the palate the wine enters full and rich reminiscent of the aromas on the nose. The wine has amazing clarity and depth with a zesty persistence.' – Tokara
