Don Rafael López de Heredia y Landeta founded Viña Tondonia in the years 1913-14. Tondonia was to become the bodega’s most famous vineyard and product. Viña Tondonia is a beautiful vineyard of over 100 hectares, situated on the right bank of the river Ebro, where the most typical Rioja wines are grown. Apart from Tondonia, López de Heredia owns three more vineyards also set in the Rioja Alta region. These are the 'Viña Cubillo', 'Viña Bosconia' and 'Viña Zaconia'. These vineyards are planted to ensure that maximum quality starts in the vines themselves, forming the basis of the reputation of Lopez Heredia.

Tasting notes:
'The red flagship 2006 Viña Tondonia Reserva was inspired by the vineyards of the Médoc but produced with local grapes, 70% Tempranillo, 20% Garnacho, 5% Graciano and 5% Mazuelo, which achieved 13% alcohol in 2006. It always matures in used American oak barriques for some six years. The oldest of all the reds I tasted, it was also the one with more freshness, which speaks to the quality of the vineyard. This takes the lion's share of the 400,000 bottles the winery produces, with some 220,000 bottles filled over a period of 12 consecutive days in May 2014.’ – Wine Advocate, 95/100

'Vivid red. Highly perfumed scents of ripe red currant, cherry liqueur, pipe tobacco, leather and rose oil, along with a hint of coconut in the background. Juicy and precise on the palate, offering deep-pitched red fruit preserve, spicecake and floral pastille flavors and a hint of mocha. The silky, sweet, impressively long finish features excellent clarity and lingering spice and smoke nuances.' – Josh Raynolds, Vinous, 93/100

About Viña Tondonia:
The house of López Heredia is the epitome of traditional winemaking and reflects the history of one of the world’s great wine regions. In fact, little has changed over the last 140+ years; today’s wines take you on a journey to a time before high alcohols, gooey fruit and early releases. In a world of trend-chasing and clear-cut, innocuous wines, the wines of López de Heredia are oxidative, finely elegant and have a depth of umami flavour that make them so food-friendly. It is an absolute privilege to import this traditional dynasty of treasure.
