'The 2019 Graacher Himmelreich Riesling Spätlese is precise, fresh and pure on the nose that displays notes grated lemon rind and crushed stones. Round, piquant and juicy on the palate, this is an utterly refined yet sustainable and firmly structured Spätlese with dense and vibrating fresh Riesling fruit whose sweetness is well-compensated by mineral grip, salinity and tension. 'The 2019er Graacher Himmelreich Riesling Spätlese was fermented down to sweet levels of residual sugar. It captures one’s attention with a quite primary, smoky, and floral nose of white peach, herbs, grapefruit, citrus, and lots of spices. The wine develops some succulent yellow and canned fruits as well as a hint of apricot cream on the direct palate. All these elements are well wrapped into a dynamic and focused acidity, which whips up the flavors in the long and delicately fruity and honeyed finish. This wine needs a good decade to integrate its touch of upfront richness and sweetness on the palate, but everything is present for a great Spätlese at maturity. 'AP number 08 20. RS 70 g/l. There's a little graininess somehow on the nose, something I have found before on wines from this vineyard (cf Wehlener Sonnenuhr). Willi Schaefer is a small family winery that dates back to the year 1121. They produce exclusively Riesling, because this grape variety is qualitatively the best that thrives on their weathered Devonian slate soil. Their parcels are located in Graacher Dompropst and Graacher Himmelreich, as well as in Wehlener Sonnenuhr. The plots are located on steep slate slopes and consist of up to 100-year-old, ungrafted vines.
