'In the Robertson appellation we find some calcareous soils, and calcium is Chardonnay’s friend. Calcium helps us in the sense that it gives this wine a brilliantly defined minerality, supported by yellow citrus fruits and an elegant cereal note on the entry of the palate. The fruit and mineral combination is what really excites me about this wine, and that is why this is an unoaked Chardonnay. Included is 8% of Chenin blanc, whole bunch fermented with pumpovers, to add some zippiness (my own word) to the citrus flavours.' – Thinus Krüger, Winemaker
Patatsfontein, Patatsblanc 2020 – R 155
Notes on the 2019 vintage:'Colombard and Chenin Blanc from neighbouring vineyards supply the fruit for this near equal cuvée of these two complementary white grapes. Waxy, savoury and showing some tannic grip, this is a scented, stony, herbal white that over delivers at its price point. Drink 2021-24.' – Tim Atkin MW, SA Special Report 2020, 92/100
Joostenberg, Die Agteros Chenin Blanc 2019 – R 195
'Supple, ripe and sweetly oaked in one-third new barrels, Tyrrel Myburgh's Paarl Chenin has plenty of colour and concentration, notes of honey and cinnamon spice, appealing texture and enough acidity to freshen and lengthen the finish. Very drinkable. Drink 2020-23.' – Tim Atkin MW, SA Special Report 2020, 90/100
AA Badenhorst, Secateurs Red 2019 – R 115
Notes on the 2018 vintage: 'Remarkable given the volumes in which it's made - 100,000 bottles at the last count - this is now Cinsault based for the first time, with 10% Shiraz and 8% Grenache. The sort of thing you could drink chilled, it's juicy, bouncy and a lot of fun, with notes of summer pudding and Turkish Delight. Drink 2019-24.' – Tim Atkin MW, SA Special Report 2019, 90/100
Laventura, Tempranillo 2017 – R 300
'The red 2017 Laventura Tempranillo was produced with grapes from two vineyards, one in Labastida and the other one in Laguardia. This is the one red I tasted that seemed to take the 2017 heat better, and the wine is not far from the 2016. Yes, it's a little riper, and the fruit is a tad darker, but the wine keeps its poise and composition. It has balance and harmony, and there is only a touch of riper fruit on the finish. It finishes dry. 3,300 bottles were filled after 12 months in 500-liter oak barrels.' – Luis Gutiérrez, Wine advocate, 92/100
Intellego, Kolbroek Syrah 2017 – R 195
'This vintage involved semi-carbonic fermentation on at least half the wine. A rather beautiful and irresistible nose of lavender, rose petal, red and black fruit plus pepper. The palate shows good fruit density given an alcohol of just 12%. Lean and racy with a bone-dry finish. Pure, poised and sure to bring joy to fans of the variety.' – Christian Eedes, WineMag.co.za, 95/100
